This research examined the perceptions of parents of students in middle school and higher regarding English and entrance prep academies (prep academies). The results aim to provide fundamental background information to private learning institutions and provide marketing information to those preparing to establish new academies. Finally, this research will provide pertinent information to the parents of children who attend these academies. The research for this study was conducted mainly from an educational perspective. The two main categories of this study were: perceptions of private education and criteria involved in learning academy selection by parents. The focus was not on the recent large-scale "corporatization" of the private education sector. In order to achieve the goals of this study, there were three general areas of research interest. The first was an examination of why parents chose to switch to certain academies. The second was an examination of preferred academies. The third was an examination of parent perceptions based on particular parental characteristics. The following is an analysis of the results from a survey distributed to the parents of students in middle school or higher in large metropolitan cities across Korea in October 2009. First, the top three reasons for switching academies were: ‘my child wanted to attend (a different academy)’, ‘I recommended (a different academy)’, and ‘another parent recommended (a different academy). In conclusion, marketing campaigns did not have a significant effect on choosing a different academy. Second, there were differences in parent perceptions in choosing English and prep academies. There was a significant correlation between brand recall and top-of-mind numbers for both English and prep academies. With respect to brand recognition, Jongro M School topped the list among prep schools and Chungdahm institute was the leader among English schools. Also, there were slightly more parents who preferred prep academies. In the preference survey based on ‘age of students’, parent perceptions were as follows: Parents of pre-elementary and low grade elementary students preferred art and sport academies, parents of high grade elementary students preferred supplementary study academies and specialized English academies, and parents of high school students preferred prep academies. For parents of middle school students, there was no significant difference in preference for the different types of academies with the exception of art and sport academies. Third, perceptions of learning academies according to parental characteristics were as follows. With respect to the ‘age-of-student survey’, there was only a difference in ‘perception of the academy’ and ‘the effort of the child’. The perceptions of learning academies did not differ greatly between parents of middle school students and those of high school students. Also, parents with a university degree displayed more enthusiasm/involvement regarding their child’s education. This research attempted to examine the overall perceptions of parents and their criteria for decision-making amidst the corporatization of Korea’s private learning institute market. The majority of upper-grade students do choose prep academies and this research should provide insight into future research in the area and future policy revisions.
