The objective of this study was to examine the patterns of livelihood activities in Korea during the Neolithic Age based on faunal remains excavated from Neolithic sites. First, in order to examine the environment of the Neolithic Age and the location of the sites, we investigated the environment of the Neolithic Age and studied the distribution of Neolithic sites where faunal remains were excavated by area and period, dividing the Korean Peninsula into northeastern, northwestern, central, and south coastal areas. Then, we analyzed faunal remains excavated from the sites, grouping them into shells, fish, mammals, and birds. According to the results of this study, Korean people in the Neolithic Age made livelihood activities using surrounding environment and captured various animals from shell to birds. Their livelihood activities were mainly collection, fishing and hunting, and excavated remains show patterns as follows. Collected shells were mainly giant pacific oyster and snail. They were collected through diving and in the areas around the excavation sites. Fish species were mainly red seabream, cod, grouper, shark, and seabream. By period, fishing activities were active during the pre‐period and the early period centering on shell mounds in islands, but decreased gradually in the middle and late periods. Excavated fishing tools include two‐piece hooks, one‐piece hooks, and fishing net‐sinkers. Mammal hunting was mainly for deer and wild boar. By period, deer and marine mammal Japanese sea lion were major game during the pre‐period and the early period, and wild boar, roe deer, etc. appeared additionally in the middle and late period. These show that hunting activities in the Korean Peninsula during the Neolithic Age were mainly for deer, wild boar and marine mammal Japanese sea lion, and excavated tools used in hunting were various forms of harpoons and stone arrowheads. Bird remains were fewer than other faunal remains. They were excavated relatively more from the Yeoseo Island Shell Mound, the Yeondae Island Shell Mound, the Dongsam‐dong Shell Mound. This suggests that for people who formed the mounds bird was another food resource in addition to shell, fish and mammals. As presented above, this study examined livelihood activities and faunal remains resulting from the activities in the Korean Peninsula during the Neolithic Age based on faunal remains and accompanying artificial remains. According to the results of this study, people in the Korean Peninsula during the Neolithic Age made livelihood activities by catching various animals from shell to bird in natural environment.
