The purpose of this study is to reproduce the original colors of clothes during the 16th and 17th centuries in Korea, by observing the excavated garments from the tomb of General Lee Eung-Hae of the Joseon Dynasty. For this research, I conducted two types of literature review. Firstly, though various old literature from the days of General Lee Eung-Hae, portraits and documental paintings, I studied the basic colors for the costumes of the high government officials and the illustrious officials during the period of General Lee Eung-Hae. Secondly, I researched the colors used for the excavated clothes, which are originally made during the 16th and 17th centuries, by reviewing diverse reports related to the field of excavated clothing. Through the literature review, I discovered that red, blue, black, brown, yellow and pale yellow(so-sack) were used for official clothing and everyday clothing for government officials during that period. I was able to analogize the original colors of the excavated clothing of General Lee Eung-Hae which are now at the Chung-Ju Museum. The 1-1 Dan-Ryung is inferred as the Red Dan-Ryung which was official costume. Outer cloth of this piece of garment is made of delicate silk without any patterns while inner silk cloth has colorful patterns of flowers and birds. Similar type of Dan-Ryung was also discovered in the tomb of Kim Yeo-On. This type of costume, which keeps splendidness only inside, represents the social atmosphere of the days putting heavy emphasis on thrift and saving of government officials. The 1-2 Dan-Ryung is thought as Black Dan-Ryung which was ceremonial costume. In 『Hak Bong Jip』written by Kim Sung Il, there is a record telling that high quality cloth was used to make ceremonial dress of Dang Sang Gwan (one of the high government officials). Also, a Dan-Ryung with patterns attached by embroidered patches has been excavated from the tomb of Kim Yeo-On. Considering the trend of those days when blue and white were main colors and the colors remained in excavated clothes from those days, the major colors for Do-Po and Gik-Ryung would had been jade green, blue and white. For Chul-Lik, Chang-Eui, and Bang-Ryung, various colors except for certain colors prohibited by the government would had been used since there was no fix color for those types of clothes. For color reproduction of the excavated costume of General Lee Eung-Hae, I used ramie fabric and silk texture in my dyeing experiment with the color palate of six basic colors - red, blue, black, yellow, green and brown. I measured the colors by utilizing MINOLTA 3600d. The colors were measured by using the Standard Luminous Source of D65(daylight, average sunlight during the day) defined by CIE (Commission Internationale de 1' Eclairage, International Light Commission). I calculated L*, a*, and b* values through the CIELAB color analyzing method. The results of color measurement were recorded as L*(luminosity), a*(red, green:+50, -50), and b* (yello, blue: +50, -50). As one can guess from the systematic rules on color usage for clothes according to different social status, diverse colors existed and were enjoyed by many people during the Joseon Dynasty. Based on this perspective, multifarious colors created through natural dyeing would have had been broadly used in various garments during the period of General Lee Eung-Hae, especially for everyday clothing rather than official clothing.
