A Study on Dyeability and Hair Damage Rate of p-Phenylenediamine and non p-Phenylenediamine Hair Dye원문보기

The purpose of this study is to evaluate dyeability and hair damage depending on dyeing time and level of discoloration depending on shampooing times for p-phenylenediamine-based and non p-phenylene diamine-based hair dyes. In this study toluene-2,5-diamine sulfate was used instead of p-phenylenediamine for non p-phenylenediamine-based hair dyes. The color of hair dyes used was black and the hair samples used were white hair. Two types of hair dyes were applied for 10, 20, 30 and 40 minutes, respectively, and their dyeability was determined by using colorimeter. As a result, black color, the resulting color of dyeing, started to form 20 minutes and 30 minutes after dye application for p-phenylenediamine-based hair dye and non-p-phenylenediamine-based dyes, respectively. The difference of the resulting color, however, was not significant. In an attempt to evaluate the hair damage, tensile strength of each hair sample was measured and changes of cuticle were observed using scanning electron microscope(SEM). As a result, the tensile strength of the 2 dyes dropped after 30 minutes, the surface of cuticle got loose and cuticles fell off. As a whole, the level of hair damage of non p-phenylenediamine-based dye was slightly higher. In order to evaluate discoloration of hair, hair samples at each time elapsed were shampooed 1, 3 and 5 times and the remaining color of the hair was determined using colorimeter. As a result, for p-phenylenediamine- based hair dye, the 20-minute sample, for which the dyeability was the best, showed lower durability exhibiting a high discoloration, whereas the 30- and 40-minute samples showed a good durability relative to dyeability exhibiting practically no discoloration. For non p-phenylene diamine-based dye, the 30-minute sample, for which the dyeability was the best showed the lowest discoloration. The 40-minute sample showed a good dyeability and high discoloration. As a whole, the level of hair discoloration of non-p-phenylenediamine-based dye was slightly higher. From these results, both of the 2 hair dyes were found to show a good hair damage and durability relative to dyeability at 30 minutes elapsed after dyeing. Looking comprehensively for the above result,?the p-phenylenediamine hairdye had faster speed for dyeing compared to the non p-phenylenediamine hair dye, but there was no diffirence in dye, and for the continuity and damaged part,?the p-phenylenediamine hair dye had better results. However, it is advised that a special care should be payed in selecting and applying hair dyes considering adverse effects that can occur in the body. Findings of this study, as comparative data of non-p-phenylenediamine-based and p-phenylenediamine-based hair dyes that are available in the market, might be helpful to hair dye companies, experts and consumers' choice and application.
