An early childhood measurement activities associated with daily life refers to a program that has preschoolers engage in measurement activities by utilizing various situations that they are likely to face in daily life. The focus of this study was to develop an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life in an effort to help preschoolers to learn and understand how to measure things in daily routine life. It's specifically meant to develop an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life by focusing on length, volume, weight, area and time, and to examine its effect on the measurement abilities, mathematical process and mathematical attitude of preschoolers. The following research questions were posed: [Question 1] What should make up an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life? 1-1. What are the goal and objective of an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life? 1-2. What is the content of an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life? 1-3. What is the instruction and learning method of an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life? 1-4. How should an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life be evaluated? [Question 2] What is the effect of an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life? 2-1. What effect does an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life have on the measurement abilities of preschoolers? 2-2. What effect does an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life have on the mathematical process of preschoolers? 2-3. What effect does an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life have on the mathematical attitude of preschoolers? The procedure and method of this research are as follows. To address Research Question 1, the state of measurement activities in an early childhood education institution was checked, and teacher's awareness of early childhood measurement activities and their needs were investigated to collect basic information on the development of an early childhood measurement program associated with daily life. Domestic and foreign studies and literature were analyzed to set up the goal and objective of the program, and what should make up the program was determined based on the results of the literature review and by consulting with experts. After 37 kinds of activities were developed, the selected activities were modified, and then a program that consisted of 20 activities was finally developed. As for Research Question 2, how much the early childhood measurement program associated with daily life was effective at boosting the measurement abilities, mathematical process and mathematical attitude of preschoolers was analyzed. The subjects in this study were 46 five-year-old children in Y daycare center in the city of Y, South Jeolla Province. An experimental group and a comparative group were organized with 23 preschoolers each, and the experimental group participated in the program during an 11-week period from October 26, 2009, to January 8, 2010, twice a week. The control group engaged in typical measurement activities. The instruments used in this study were the measurement segment of Hong HaeKyung, Lee Jeong-Wook, Jeong Jeong-Hee(2006)’s mathematical ability test and Kim So-hyang (2004)’s mathematical process and mathematical attitude inventories. The collected data were analyzed with a SPSS 14.0 program, and Independent samples t-test was carried out on each group’s pre- and post- average of children’s measurement abilities, mathematical process and mathematical attitude. The results of this research can be summarized as follows. First, the purpose of the early childhood measurement program associated with daily life was to teach the preschoolers to learn and understand how to measure things in everyday life, and the objective of it was to improve their measurement abilities, mathematical process and mathematical attitude. The program was composed of exploring the attributes of length, volume, weight, area and time, comparing their attributes, determining the order of things, measuring by using a nonstandardized tool and unit, measuring by using a standardized thing, and measuring by using a standardized tool and unit. Concerning the development process of the early childhood measurement program associated with daily life, there were four different stages that respectively dealt with problem awareness, sharing opinions on what they explored, problem solving through inquiry, reflection and evaluation: introduction, composition, development and wrapping-up. Teachers' roles were more focused on the distinctive ones such as a planner, questioner, facilitator, encourager, interaction mediator, task performance supervisor, verbal interaction facilitator and evaluator. And the kind of evaluation that could rate the measurement activities associated with daily life in accordance with the content-centered, process-centered and affective educational objectives was prepared to review the process of instruction, to figure out the abilities of the preschoolers and to grasp what improvements should be done. Second, as a result of analyzing the effect of the early childhood measurement program associated with daily life, the experimental group statistically significantly surpassed the comparative group in overall measurement abilities and measurement of length, weight, area, volume and time, which were the subfactors of measurement abilities. It showed that the measurement program associated with daily life was effective at boosting the measurement abilities of the preschoolers and their measurement abilities of length, weight, area, volume and time, which were the subfactors of measurement abilities. As to mathematical process, the experimental group significantly excelled the comparative group in overall mathematical process and its subfactors involving problem solving, reasoning and communication. In terms of mathematical attitude, the experimental group was significantly ahead of the comparative group in overall mathematical attitude and its subfactors including mathematical curiosity, attention, openness, activeness and continuity. In conclusion, the early childhood measurement program associated with daily life, which was developed in this study, turned out to have an effect on the improvement of the measurement abilities, mathematical process and mathematical attitude of the preschoolers. The finding lends credibility to the applicability of early childhood measurement programs associated with daily life in early childhood education institutions.
