Over the past years, many LCCs(Low Cost Carriers) have been founded in Korea, bringing lots of changes in the airline industry of the country. Unlike existing large airline companies, low cost carriers are changing the landscape of the air transportation market by approaching customers without unnecessary services and simplified procedures, especially in relation to boarding. The purpose of this study is to examine customers' preference on services that are currently provided by low cost carriers provide low cost carriers' customer strategies that are advantageous over existing large airline companies. For the purpose, this study has examined difference in customers' preference about low cost carriers' services in accordance with their demographic characteristics and the characteristics of their pattern of using airliners. For study, a survey of customers(n=264) domestic airline was conducted in Gim-Hae international airport during the period from February 18 to March 4, 2010. Findings of the study can be summarized as follows. There's no significant difference in customers' preference about simplified ticket reservation and charged entertainment services by low cost carriers by customers' gender, but there's a significant difference by the customers' age. Customers were somewhat skeptical about low cost carriers' provision of charged in-flight meals and beverages and in-flight events. In terms of ticket reservation and seat allocation, customers most preferred the Internet-based ticket reservation and seat designation systems. On one hand, customers were positive about the simplification of low cost carriers' services or the Internet-based ticket reservation procedures. But on the other hand, there was no big difference between in-flight services that customers were expecting to receive from low cost carriers and existing large airline companies. This was greatly threatening to low cost carriers whose survival was heavily depending on price competitiveness. Findings of the study suggest that low cost carriers should build up service marketing strategies focusing on customers' age rather than on their gender. Also low cost carriers should be more active in simplifying services or implementing so-called the no frill strategy which truly complies with the carriers' identity. In association, they need to gradually expand the range of services for which customers are charged, even though there's still skepticism about low cost carriers' priced services. Meanwhile, an analysis as a part of the study showed that there was some difference between service prices that customers were perceiving as rational and low cost carriers were perceiving as reasonable and expecting. This study had some limitations, for example, the questionnaire survey was conducted only in Busan. And most of the surveyed customers were users of low cost carriers' domestic lines. Still, few of the carriers are providing international lines. In future, therefore, empirical researches on customers' preference about low cost carriers' services need to be made in the other areas including Seoul and Incheon where the carriers are most keenly competing each other. In addition, further studies should be made considering more diverse services need to be conducted to provide a better understandings of customers' preference on airline services.
