This paper aims at the conservation principle of the original form at the repair construction of cultural assets and rejects the use of the modern materials.
The concept of the repair is based on the restoration as mentioned in the article 9~13 of the Venice Charter-1964, and this concept persues the authenticity of the cultural assets.
Thus an Experimental Study on the Characteristics of Ganghoe(Lime) Used in Korean Traditional Architecture Walls has a meaning at transmitting the construction techniques, which were used by our ancestors and recorded on literatures, from generation to generation and developing of these techniques. Furthermore this paper has a meaning at establishing the standard of the scientific management plan of the cultural assets.
Now, the materials used for the repairs of the cultural asset in the field are modern things for the convenience rather than those written in the literatures. And when the cultural assets are repaired, the constructors who followed the wrong experience have applied the mixing materials or the mixing ratio without the objective documents and the standards.
Because we have not conserved the original form of the cultural assets, we lost the authenticity of the restoration of the cultural assets. In particular, we have made some problem while plastering because of the application of the wrong mixing materials or the wrong mixing ratio.
Therefore this study verifies by experiments on the Ganghoe mortar which is the most important in the plastering.
Thus, this study inquires into the production, the procurement and the application of Ganghoe(lime) by following the literatures. And this study tries many experiments of the compressive strength of the mortar according to the mixing materials, the mixing ratio and the curing periods which are based on the use of the Ganghoe mortar. Moreover this study verifies the crack by experiment the walls which are made differently by applying the age and other two varibles.
This study aims at making the basis for the restoration of the Ganghoe mortar ,which were used by our ancestors, by analyzing and arranging the characteristics of the Ganghoe mortar which are based on the experimental results, and at presentation the standard of the mixing materials or the mixing ratio which will be able to apply these in the fields. And the results are as follows.
First of all, the Ganghoe was used at the national construction sites regardless of the quality of Ganghoe or the place of the procurement in early Chosun Dynasty, and at the private construction sites in late Chosun Dynasty.
By increasing of the demand at the private construction sites, there are the preference for the good quality of Ganghoe and the close place of the procurement, and there are the grade of the quality of Ganghoe.
Secondly, by the literatures, we can find that there are many different materials to make the mixing material of Ganghoe contrary to the modern material. The kinds of the materials are the paper, the rice soup, the root of elm tree, the glue, the perilla oil, the sand and the white soil, we can call Yoohoe, Soohoe and Sammulhoe as the name of Ganghoe according to the kinds of the mixing materials. Ganhoe was used differently according to the name. Yoohoe was used as an adhesive and a waterproofer to fill the crack of the building stone, and also used for the plastering on Yangsangdohoe or the wall. Soohoe was used to fill the crack of the building stone or for the plastering such as the wall, the chimney, the stone fence, the stair, the ridge of the roof. Sammulhoe was used for protection of tombs by strengthen the stone which contact the soil in the tombs, used for the basis of the sculpture or the building.
Beside, the uses of Ganghoe such as the different mixing ratio have been developed by time, because of this, the construction methods have been developed by using not only at the national building construction but also at the private building construction in the 18th century. And in the early 19th century the modern masonry walls were build by applying the western's materials and the mixing ratio.
Thirdly, we conducted some experiments according to the mixing materials or the mixing ratio written in the literatures. As a result of the experiments, the compression strength was the strongest at the sample E, Ganghoe mixted with the white cement at the 1st check(28 days), but the compression strength was the strongest at the sample C, the fine sand, at the 4th check(112 days). And the compression strength of the sample D, Ganghoe, was the weakest during the experiments. Therefore, we found that the compression strength was increasing after 56 days and the sample C, the fine sand, has been increasing the long-term strength.
Lastly, the cracks of the wall spreaded out like the spokeds of a weel at the sample A, the rice soup, and the sample B, the root of elm tree indoors and out. However, at the sample C(the fine sand), the sample D(Ganghoe) and the sample E(Ganghoe mixed with the white cement), this crack was not. Thus, we can conclude that the strain of the samples would be increased because of the excellent in the elasticity and absorption at the sample A and the sample B during the the curing periods.
