In recent years, the number of children with ADHD exploded with close connections revealed between children's tendencies and learning disability, development disability, and emotional disability. Also exploding is interest in children with ADHD by teachers and parents. Partially responsible for the explosion of children with ADHD are the social environment, which is increasingly complex and rapidly changing, and parents' tolerant upbringing attitudes(Han Suk-im, 2004). Thus there has appeared an urgent need for the teachers to understand children with ADHD in an educational sense. The purposes of this study were to analyze research findings about children with ADHD according to cognition, behavior, and emotion and understand them in the shoes of the teachers. It also aimed to interpret them from the brain-scientific perspective, analyze the causes, and search for solutions from the educational aspect based on scientific grounds. There are three major tendencies that persist among children with ADHD for a certain period of time; they are inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity(Choi Gang-hye, 2006). In other words, children with ADHD tend to get easily distracted and have a short attention span. They are hardly persistent, easily move from one activity to another one, and get embarrassed not knowing what to do. Teachers describe such children as "unfocused," "failing to complete tasks," and "having a short attention span." It takes only a few of those kids to distract the teaching atmosphere during lessons. Even at home, the parents find them incapable of listening for long hours, showing persistent interest, and remembering things. Furthermore, children with ADHD are impulsive and cannot easily control their impulses. Children usually develop the ability to think before act and invest more and more time into problem solving to finish a task. On the contrary, children with ADHD behave younger than their peers. Children with intense impulsivity distract the classroom atmosphere during lessons, get into a fight with friends often, and get into trouble a lot. Another problem with those children is the inability to observe social rules. In children with ADHD, hyperactivity refers to purposeless acts that are clearly distinguished from those of their peers in leading a daily life. Those children break into others' conversations, make strange sounds, climb things, run around the classroom, try to touch everything in sight, striking the desk with a pencil noisily, and bother their friends. Inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity can be observed in a child or only some of them can be observed in a child. It is accepted that the most essential characteristics to diagnose children with ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, but the tendencies that make certain children problems of the classroom are difficult to explain so simply. Thus the study divided children's characteristics and tendencies into the behavioral, cognitive, and emotional aspects for analysis. As for cognitive characteristics, children can lack in the ability of verbal expression and attention despite their normal intelligence. It is also true with children with ADHD, who are not much different from ordinary children in terms of intelligence quotient. However, they lag behind ordinary children in verbal expression such as sentence expression and attention and thus record a higher rate of academic underachievement than ordinary children. As for behavioral characteristics, those children display much hyperactivity and impulsivity. Impulsivity can be approached in the cognitive and behavioral aspect; impulsivity refers to the inability to make proper judgments of various alternative solutions in the cognitive level and the inability to control unwanted words or physical acts in the behavioral level. Brain-scientifically speaking, impulsivity is the burst of reactions unfit for the given situations and emotional responses due to improper interactions between the cerebral cortex in charge of reason and the limbic system in charge of emotion. Children exhibit hyperactivity because of poor interactions between the excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. Finally, children with ADHD lack in stability and get into troubles with peers due to the insufficient ability to control emotions. As explained above, children with ADHD cannot control their emotions through reason due to improper interactions between the cerebral cortex and the limbic system. However, even those children can reduce their problematic tendencies through repetitive training and stable environment. The causes of those tendencies among children with ADHD can be explained with the lacking activity of the frontal lobe and the abnormality of neurotransmitters. Especially, the cognitive abnormality of children with ADHD is caused by the inactivity of the frontal lobe, their behavioral abnormality is caused by the improper amount of neurotransmitters secreted, and their emotional abnormality is caused by the improper coordination between the cerebral cortex and the limbic system. Once the causes of children with ADHD are understood brain-scientifically, another question rises; whether children's behavior can be improved or not. Cognitive scientists explain that the brain can recover some of its lost functions due to the injury in the early stage of life. Such ability of the brain is called "brain plasticity"(Jo Ju-yeon, 1994). Such researches provide scientific grounds for the argument that children with ADHD can increase in desirable acts and decrease in problematic acts by doing repetitive attention training and thus solidifying the concerned neural circuits. Thus both the teachers and the parents should base their ongoing education on the belief that children's brains can be altered in a positive direction. Base on those grounds, instruction plans to improve the tendencies of children with ADHD can be devised in the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional aspects; first, both the teachers and parents can increase children's concentration of attention by providing a proper classroom environment and diverse teaching and learning materials; secondly, a classroom environment that is safe to children and does not give stress to them can contribute to the reduction of children's hyperactivity by developing their brains and making them emotionally stable; and finally, children can increase their ability to control emotions through self-monitoring. There are many studies that report on positive results of children's self-monitoring programs both in the emotional and behavioral aspects. The study explored educational plans to apply the brain-scientific understanding of children with ADHD into the scenes of education and generate effects. It will be a very meaningful study to observe changes to children with ADHD by applying the educational instruction plans proposed in the study. The research findings will hopefully help children with ADHD lead a positive and smooth life just like ordinary children both at home and in school and fulfill their responsibilities and duties as members of the society.
