ABSTRACT A Study on the Development of Senior Programs in Public Libraries : Compared with Senior Welfare Centers of Seoul City Mi-Cho Kim Dept. of Library & Information Science The Graduate School Sangmung University Public libraries deliver knowledge and culture to a local community and have been created new information services according to a change of the age, but the arrival of an aging society is requiring change of information services in public libraries for equal information rights which is information have-nots, and it is a point of time that the interest and efforts on the aged is heartily necessary. The public libraries in the Knowledge-Information Society have made efforts to give benefits so that all residents of a local community can approach necessary information and utilize, but it is true that the equal information rights doesn't reach equal information rights certainly in a reality. The present thesis researched to grasp senior education programs being operated at 33 Senior Welfare Centers and Homepage of 41 public libraries in Seoul with the purpose of providing senior education services and researching program development of public libraries for elderly population of an aging society. The research method divided common community education programs that individual aged people can select and participate at Senior Welfare Centers and public libraries into 7 kinds of detailed themes such as health, literacy/education, information education, death preparation education, hobbies, employment/volunteer and others, and surveyed corresponding items by institution, and calculated/extracted the number of institutions after again changing it according to a theme. As a result of comparing senior education programs provided by Senior Welfare Center and public libraries, it was discovered that there is a clear difference in senior programs provided by two institutions. The Senior Welfare Center provides much more senior programs, whereas the public libraries appeared that the number of institutions participating in senior services is very few, and the program provision for elderly population appeared to be extremely insufficient. Also, the present thesis developed and illustrated a schedule of individual programs on senior information that can be utilized to each theme according to the above 6 themes to develop programs that can be provided to senior users at public libraries. The geriatric courses were exemplified as a health education program, and the basic English course was exemplified as literacy/education, and the basic computer utilization was exemplified as information education programs, and making of a happiness map was exemplified as a death preparation education program, and a reading club was exemplified as a hobby education program, and story-telling was developed and exemplified as employment/volunteer education programs. After the program of 'making of a happiness map' of death preparation education, which is one theme among them, a questionnaire survey on satisfaction such as content and course, etc. of programs was carried out, so the reaction of recipients on death preparation education appeared as much satisfaction in educational satisfaction(77.1%) and evaluation items(59.1%). Therefore, it was expected that the present program is valuable information coincident with interest and expectations of the aged, and is a proper program being communicated with a senior information provision service of public libraries.
