The purpose of this thesis is to examine an application strategy of Alexander Technique to actors' systematic physical training and then provide an effective training method of Alexander Technique to actors and would-be actors. Since acting is originally a means of arousing mental inspiration to audience by reproducing the life of characters who are created by a writer, an actor must carry out self-development training continuously for the freedom of body and mind. The most important thing in actor's self-development training is physical training. An actor learns the method of physical training from the initial stage of establishing the foundation of his acting in general and he uses the acquired method of physical training for the rest of his life as an actor. In this vein, the system of guiding methods must be established definitely, but many actors have received no systematic and specialized training that is appropriate for their physical conditions in everyday life and acting career and therefore just carried out their own methods of training. These kinds of physical training methods can have positive influence upon the body temporarily. But they are extremely personal and arbitrary and their effect cannot be guaranteed as a result. Therefore, they must acquire a systematic and specialized physical training method from the beginning of their acting. By providing help to actors in understanding unnecessary tension and inefficient physical habits and customs that can function as obstacles for their acting, Alexander Technique can improve physical posture and movement, thus reeducating the body. For this, the investigator analyzed the principle and characteristic of Alexander Technique and found out its positive influence upon physical training. In addition, the investigator presented an Alexander Technique-based teaching guidance that could be used in the learning of acting and then examined the achievement and developmental strategy of the teaching guidance after applying it to actual scenes of actors' physical training. In the second chapter, the shaping background and basic terminology of Alexander Technique were examined. Via his own experience, Alexander found the fact that wrong physical habits in everyday life are closely connected with mental problems. So, he systematized improving techniques of wrong physical habits and then theoretically established the techniques of solving unnecessary muscle tension. Main principles of this technique are suppression, presentation of mental direction, sensitive consciousness and so on. Suppression is to perceive physical habits before acting. The presentation of mental direction is to give orders continuously in order to guide the body to be used correctly. And sensitive consciousness is to realize wrongful use of the body and then use it correctly. With these techniques, an actor can examine his body and use it correctly in everyday life, thus controlling unnecessary tension in acting, acquiring the freedom of body and mind and concentrating on the creation of roles and immersion in acting. In the third chapter, the investigator examined the practical function and influence of Alexander Technique via a questionnaire survey and interviews of actors. Study findings show that active actors for the present realize the necessity of physical training, but they use not systematic and scientific techniques but personal techniques of which focus is physical relaxation. Most of actors who responded the questionnaire survey presented positive and acceptable attitudes toward the efficacy of Alexander Technique-oriented physical training. In this vein, it is necessary to develop an Alexander Technique-based program which is appropriate for the teaching of acting and cultivate specialized trainers who can teach Alexander Technique in association with the teaching of acting simultaneously. In the fourth chapter, the investigator presented a teaching plan of Alexander Technique (the core point of this study) which could be used in the teaching of acting by trainers. The basic guidance structure of Alexander Technique is a hand-used physical contact and consists of chair work and table work in general. The chair work makes learners practice sitting motions and cut off habitual reactions, thus improving their body. On the other hand, the table work makes learners realize the relaxation of muscle by maximizing the correct use of body and senses in a lying down posture. Via this training, trainees can control tension and breathing and improve efficient movement and self-expression that are necessary in acting. Nearly all the participants in the investigator's Alexander Technique-oriented teaching of acting experienced positive physical changes. In concrete, the changes can be classified as follows: (1) learners realized unnecessary physical habits and then used the body correctly, thus making unrestraint and diverse expressions possible; (2) via exercising, they could removed unnecessary inherent habits, maximize senses and relax muscles, thus relaxing tension which occurred just before acting and concentrating on the immersion of their character; (3) by controlling tension and breathing, their self-confidence increased; and (4) by reading the lines with clear voice through the method of breathing and vocalization of Alexander Technique, their ability of acting was improved. Therefore, if Alexander Technique is used in the physical training of teaching of acting, actors can maintain their physical conditions optimally and thus improve their quality of acting ultimately. Although there are the above positive effects in Alexander Technique, it is not popularized for the present. Its causes seem to be: (1) since physical reactions which can be presented by individuals are extremely relative, all the actors are not possible to create positive effects; (2) the correct introduction of Alexander Technique in schools or on the actual scenes of acting is not realized so far and there is no systematically established frame of Alexander Technique; and (3) there are no specialized leaders who can carry out Alexander Technique and teaching of acting simultaneously. However, the positive effects, usefulness and advantages of basic principles and training methods of Alexander Technique have been verified in the investigator's teaching of acting and in the teaching of overseas famous schools and studies for a long time. In this vein, as an actor and acting guide, the investigator tried to announce Alexander Technique which was not domestically popular for the present and then find out its effective strategy of teaching. Therefore, if a foundation of using Alexander Technique in the teaching of acting on the basis of the positive effects of study findings, it can be placed as a technique that can help actors directly and as a method of specialized physical training.
