In recent years, a number of countries have actively engaged in promoting tourism using PR video through the global media. Tourism PR video has been widely recognized as an important means to create or change the image of a tourist destination. In this regard, there have been many studies on the potential impact of brochure- or poster-based tourism PR on creating or changing the image of a tourist destination (Wicks & Schuett, 1991; Jeong, 2002; Caroline, 2004; Choi & Yoo, 2005), while the number of in-depth studies on the tourism destination promotion using video PR materials have been quite limited. Since the image of a tourist destination has a significant influence on the selection of a tourist site, enhancing its image has been considered a critical element in a PR strategy (Ahmed, 1996; Kang & Nah, 2009). In addition, as regards measures to raise visual effectiveness when producing tourism PR materials, theories on visuality and aesthetic preference by Berlyne (1974) and Ulich (1993) may be useful. When this theory about aesthetic preference is studied in connection with landscape preference, the attention recovery theory(ART) is often referred to (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989, Van den Berg et al., 2003; Han, 2010). According to their research, when the visual content of certain landscapes has greater restorative quality, it has a more positive impact on people's release of stress and therefore people tend to focus on and prefer the landscapes. With this attention recovery theory, they tried to explain the reasons why people prefer nature-friendly landscapes over man-made landscapes. Based on these precedent studies, this study suggests the following as its objectives. First, to examine the impact of visuality of tourism PR video materials on changing the tourism destination image. Second, to examine the impact of visuality of tourism PR video materials on restorative quality. Third, to examine the impact of a tourism image on tourism destination preference. Fourth, to examine the impact of the restorative quality on the tourism destination preference. In addition, for each case, this study will examine whether there are significant differences between the impact of nature-friendly landscapes and man-made landscapes. In this study, for empirical analysis through an experimental design, two video clips taken from Japanese tourism PR video materials were selected as experiment tools, one with nature-friendly settings, the other with urban-friendly settings. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted before and after the experiment on 462 Korean students enrolled in college or graduate school in Seoul who have never visited Japan. Empirical statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSSWIN 15.0 package program and AMOS 7.0. The results of this study are as follows. First, when before- and after- exposure to a tourism PR video were compared, cognitive and affective tourism images were improved on the whole. However, according to the type of tourism video used for the experiment, there was a slight difference in their impact on the tourism image. The PR video with nature-friendly contents contributed greatly to the overall improvement of the cognitive image--in particular, perception of the tourism resources factor. Contrariwise, the PR video with urban-friendly contents contributed to overall improvement of the affective image--in particular, the excitement and dynamism factor. Second, the impact of tourism PR video materials on restorative quality was high overall. In particular, findings showed that the PR video with the nature-friendly setting had a significant impact on restorative quality, which is consistent with precedent studies of Kaplan & Kaplan (1989). Third, the probability of a tourism image as a significant antecedent variable that affects visiting preference was low. This is because questions measuring visitor preference in this study are more about direct intention to visit Japan than choosing among the candidate destinations. Such questions might not be exactly relevant, considering the university students have limited power in deciding whether to travel to Japan or not. Fourth, the restorative quality as well, due to the same reasons as above, did not have a significant impact on overall visitor preference. However, the PR video with nature-friendly settings had a relatively noteworthy impact on raising visiting preference by improving the landscape fascination factor within the restorative quality.
