The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of individual and college characteristics on wage determination of new college graduates. The study examined (1) how much individuals and colleges' monthly income would vary, (2) what factors would explain the difference of individuals monthly income and (3) if monthly incomes are significantly different among colleges after controlling the effect of individual variables, then what college variables would explain the difference.
The study collected data from the 2007 Graduate Occupational Mobility Survey I (2007GOMS1) to better understand the factors related to earnings of new graduates in the face of recent economic depression. The college variables in the study were constructed from three sources; the Academic Info 2007, J's Scholastic Aptitude Test DB for 2002 and 2003, and Joong Ang Daily's college evaluation. The individual level variables were categorized into individual characteristics, college experience and labor market environment. And, college level variables were divided into college background and college quality. For multilevel analysis, HLM 6.01 and SPSS 15.0 were used.
Findings indicated that college quality affects on new graduate's future earnings. Specifically, at the college level, the average SAT score was the most effective predictive variable. College satisfaction, student to faculty ratio, and financial investment in education explained the difference of earnings among colleges. College experience chosen by each individual for instance, college major, GPA, attending career development program and studying abroad, influenced labor market outcomes as well. Labor market conditions such as employment types, job location and job match were also influential factors on graduate's earning. The explanatory power of labor market variables was the largest among individual level variables. This reflected that the demand side of labor market exerts more influence on determining new graduates' wage in Korea.
These findings suggested that college quality plays an important role in increasing college graduate's labor market outcomes. Policy makers as well college administrators might do well to formulate and fund policies focused on improving college quality. However, the impact of output and process factors of college quality on new graduates' earnings was not as influential as SAT scores. This implies that we need further research on the relationship between college input and output in order to improve effectiveness and efficiency of college education.
