In the 21st century, as the interactions among nations or peoples become active, many societies are facing the coexistence of various cultures in their communities. It is natural that this stream of times is led to a change into a multicultural society. As a result of international marriage and the immigration of foreign workers, Korea also witnesses the increase in the proportion of multicultural families, and the importance of multicultural education is attracting more and more attention. Against this backdrop, in order to consider how Korea’s music education should be changed, this thesis chooses dramatic music as a way of multicultural music education. Dramatic music is a comprehensive art which is composed of many different sorts of arts. Accordingly, among a variety of musical genres, it can be regarded as the most proper way of understanding multi-culture. This thesis chooses East Asian traditional dramatic music among dramatic music of countries around the world and implements the research by comparing Korean classical opera (chang-geuk), Kabuki, and Beijing opera (jing-ju). This thesis is comprised of following contents. First of all, it considers the definition and conception of multiculturalism and the necessity of multicultural music education. Secondly, it analyzes factors related to multiculturalism which are presented in Korea’s music education course of the 7th Educational Curriculum and that of 2007. Thirdly, it makes a research on the definition of dramatic music, the importance of it, and the educational effect of the lesson of dramatic music. Lastly, it compares Korean classical opera (chang-geuk), Kabuki, and Beijing opera (jing-ju). Through the comparative method, this thesis studies the three dramatic music in line with historical perspective, roles of actors, accompaniments, and instruments. This thesis is intended to help general understanding of dramatic music and, furthermore, give readers the opportunities to experience multi-culture. This research will be helpful to understanding and comparing the characters of the three countries’ music. In addition, it will contribute to the multicultural experience through music.
