As modern people spend more time indoors, the importance of public health on indoor air quality is being emphasized and recently, development of low-cost, high-efficient technology is actively underway to eliminate the environmental pollutants. In the study, a biological treatment to get rid of carbon monoxide which is one of the three major toxins of Environmental Tobacco Smoke that worsens the indoor air quality was conducted.
Currently in Korea, the studies on tobacco smoke within the interior space are mostly on measuring the pollution level of a certain pollutant and it is difficult to find some studies on its reduction. Although there is a significant progress on research to remove the indoor air pollutants using plants, there are only very few studies on carbon monoxide field. Thus, the possibility of eliminating carbon monoxide through plants, soil and microorganisms to prevent the indoor air quality from deteriorating was examined and the ability of Chrysalidocarpus and Chamaedorea - highly popular these days as the ornamental plants since they are easy to raise and require partial sunlight - to get rid of carbon monoxide in the indoor tobacco smoke was focused in this study.
The experiment was performed in 3 hermetic, acrylic chambers, 366ℓ in size, and the concentration of carbon monoxide was controlled burning 2 cigarettes. The initial concentration was 382∼419ppm and in case of the Chamaedorea, more than 90% of the carbon monoxide generated from the initial tobacco smoke was removed and for the Chrysalidocarpus, all the carbon monoxide was removed after 24 hours which led to a result that the yellow palms are significantly efficient in getting rid of the carbon monoxide.
It is known that carbon monoxide is eliminated by microorganisms that are living in the soil. Yet, when the experiment value of flowerpot only with soil inside the chamber was compared with that of flowerpot with 2 types of palm trees, it was identified that the latter one was far more superior in eliminating the carbon monoxide. Moreover, the amount of CO removed per leaf area of plant unit was calculated so that it can be used for comparison at experiments with other plants in the future. It may be helpful to use the result of calculation on the number of plants suitable for the volume of actual interior space.
The efficiency of 2 types of palm trees to eliminate CO was proven from the study. Though it is not dangerous for the plants to be exposed to tobacco smoke to the extent that they are not threatened for existence or led to slow growth, however, there are pollutants in the tobacco smoke that may have negative effects on the physiological function of those plants. So, it is possible that the efficiency in elimination of CO in the general indoor atmosphere or pure CO will be improved. Based on the result of experiment that was executed without 12-hour of sunlight out of 24 hours, it is believed to be very encouraging to have found out that CO can also be eliminated when the plants are not under photosynthesis.
So as to suggest the development of biological, self-purification plants for the interior spaces, first of all, CO elimination mechanism due to plants should be discovered, secondly, plants that are proven to be efficient in eliminating CO through experiments with various plants should be found and lastly, studies on plants that are actually planted in the real interior spaces that people live in should be conducted in the future.
