To understand the ecological features of 10 selected population of Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai in Korea, the habitat environment was investigate and analyzed, and characteristics of community structures were examined in 25 studied plots by distinguishing the types of vegetation using plant sociology method. Principle component analysis and average linkage cluster analysis were performed to explain the relationship between populations based on morphological features of leaves and fruit petiole of selected superior tree from the 10 habitats. Growth characteristics of their progenies and morphological characteristics of their leaves were analyzed. In addition, characteristics of flowering lateral and nectar secretion were investigated and analyzed, and the potential of the nectar being used as a honey plant was investigated by estimating the amount of nectar secreted per tree.
1. Ecological Characteristics
The habitat of H. dulcis var. koreana in Korea considerably differs between regions and is distributed across the hillside and valley in the range of latitude 35° 20′22″-38° 10′22″ and longitude 126° 41′35″-130° 53′04″, 70-900 meters above sea level. Cluster structure analysis was performed to identify the ecological characteristics of 25 studied plots: The H. dulcis var. koreana community was separated and was classified into the Quercus mongolica group and the Sambucus sieboldiana var. pendula group.
The Q. mongolica group was classified into the Platycarya strobilacea Siebold & Zucc. var. strobilacea for. Strobilacea sub-group and the Fraxinus rhynchophylla. Hance sub-group. Thus, the H. dulcis var. koreana forest habitat was classified as one community with two groups and two sub-groups with a total of three vegetation units.
The tall tree layer, shrub layer, and herb layer showed high importance values in all stands in 25 studied plots. Species diversity index was lowest in Jangseong (0.52), and it was approximately 2.05 in most of other districts. Species diversity index per vegetation unit was high (2.53 and above) in Odae, Gapyeong, Goesan, and Boryeong, and this can be attributed to the stable community on the hillside of the districts.
The soil physico-chemical properties of H. dulcis var. koreana habitat was analyzed. In layers A and B in 10 districts, the average soil moisture was 24.1% and 23.5%, respectively; organic matter was 22.3% and 11.3%, respectively; available phosphate was 98.6 mg/kg and 118.1 mg/kg, respectively; degree of base saturation was 39.7% and 30.5%, respectively. Average C/N ratio in layer A was 14.6. Thus, most of the analyzed positive characteristics of the soil in the Korean forests were found to have higher than average values, indicating that H. dulcis var. koreana is a tree species that grow well in fertile soil.
Principle component analysis was performed for 10 soil environment factors. In layer A, primary principle component was highly correlated with pH, exchangeable Na+, exchangeable K+, and available phosphate, in descending order; secondary principle component was highly correlated with degree of base saturation, C.E.C, and exchangeable Mg2+, in descending order. In layer B, primary principle component was highly correlated with exchangeable Mg2+, pH, and total nitrogen, in descending order; secondary component was highly correlated with exchangeable Na+, degree of base saturation, and exchangeable Ca2+, in descending order.
Measure of dispersion in two dimensions was expressed by primary and secondary principle components: layer A was classified into Group 1 (Ulleung), Group 2 (Goesan), Group 3 (Odea, Seorak, and Boryeong), Group 4 (Hamyang), Group 5 (Cheongsong, Gwanggyo and Jangseong), and Group 6 (Gapyeong); layer B was classified into Group 1 (Ulleung), Group 2(Boryeong, Goesan and Gwanggyo), Group 3 (Jangseong, Odae and Hamyang), Group 4 (Gapyeong), Group 5 (Seorak), Group 6 (Cheongsong). Also, by primary and third principle components: Goesan, Odea, Seorak and Hamyang were classified a one Group in the layer A; in the layer B: Boryeong, Jangseong and Geosan were classified a one Group and Odea, Hamyang, Gapyeong and Seorak were classified other Group. Layer A and B shown higher organic matter contents than average value of forest soil in Korea.
2. Morphological Characteristics
Leaf traits were also analyzed and the results are as follows. The Gwanggyo group showed the highest value in leaf traits that are related with leaf length, leaf width, and petiole length. In correlation with the eight traits that were analyzed, leaf length was highly correlated with leaf area, leaf length, and leaf width. Size traits such as leaf length, leaf width, and leaf area were significantly correlated with qualitative traits such as leaf thickness and number of leaf vein. In comparison, correlation between same traits within a category resulted in a lower correlation coefficient.
Principle component analysis showed that primary principle component was highly correlated with leaf area, leaf length, leaf width, and petiole length, in descending order. Cluster analysis of leaf traits using average linkage method classified the leaf traits into four groups: Group I (Gwanggyo and Boryeong), Group II (Jangseong), Group III (Goesan, Chungseong, Ulleung, and Gapyeong), and Group IV (Hamyang, Odae, and Seorak).
As for the result of examining the fruit petiole features, among the 10 groups, the Gwanggyo group showed the lowest value in six items excluding such petiole features as bunch diameter and soluble solid contents. Correlation analysis of the fruit petiole traits showed that there was no significant correlation between traits in many cases. In particular, soluble solid contents was not significantly correlated with any other items.
Primary principle component was highly correlated with bunch length, petiole diameter, petiole weight, number of petiole, and number of seed, in descending order. Cluster analysis of the fruit petiole trait classified specimens into five groups: Group I (Gwanggyo), Group II (Boryeong), Group III (Jangseong and Seorak), Group IV (Hamyang, Cheongsong, Gapyeong, and Odae), and Group V (Ulleung and Goesan).
3. Growth Characteristics of Selected Progeny
The average tree height and root diameter of twenty H. dulcis var. koreana trees that were selected for breeding of a superior tree were 61.6 cm and 6.98 cm, respectively. KW 2-5 showed the best growth rate (average of 79.3 cm) whereas JN 2-2 showed the best root diameter growth rate (average of 9.16 mm).
KW 2-5, which showed the best height growth rate, had a 57% higher growth rate than family that had the lowest growth rate. JN 2-2, which showed the best root diameter growth rate, had a growth rate that is 53% higher than species that had the lowest growth rate. When the top 10% of family in terms of tree height and root diameter was selected, KW 2-5 and JN 2-2 resulted in 125% selection outcome compared with the average value of the rest of the families. When the top 20% of the families was selected, KW 2-5, JN 2-2, KW 1-1, and KW 1-15 showed 115% selection outcome.
When the leaf features of the progeny were studied, the average variation coefficient was found to be 94-42.4%, indicating a wide range of variation. Particularly, variation coefficient such as petiole length and diameter, which were 42.4% and 28.7%, respectively, were higher than that of other features. Thus, it was proven that leaf feature differed greatly between families.
The leaf features that were studied were all significantly different between families, and positive correlation was observed between all features except between leaf length and leaf morphological index. Particularly, correlation coefficient between leaf length and width was 0.8049, suggesting a highly significant correlation between them.
4. Honey plant characteristics
H. dulcis var. koreana formed a floral axis on May 15, grew for about one month, and flowered. Opening of flower buds was completed within four hours. The amount of nectar secreted for 24 hours in 41 clones was studied, and the amount of nectar secretion per indivitual tree was estimated from each clone. An average of 3.02 ㎕ of nectar was secreted and the amount of nectar secretion per individual tree was estimated to reach 2.23 liters.
The analysis of correlation between the amount of nactar secretion in 41 clones and the number of flowers per flowering lateral established a weak correlation (R2=0.003). The number of flowers per individual tree had more influence on the amount of nectar secretion per individual tree than the amount of secreted nectar per a flower did. The number of flowers per flowering lateral differed greatly between clones (207-2,388),
Flowers secreted nectar twice for two days from the opening of the flower bud, and 4.15 ㎕ of nectar was secreted per flower. The estimated number of flowers per tree based on the analysis of the fruiting branch of 52 clones was 720,000, and the amount of nectar secretion per individual tree was estimated to be 2.98 liters. Thus, the amount of nectar secretion per individual tree and the number of flower per tree of H. dulcis var. koreana were higher than those of Robinia pseudoacacia.
