The purpose of this study was to examine relation between art work pieces and the ego-identity formation by studying unconscious symbol transition and inner experience through art work and courses of work appeared in the process of ego-identity formation. For the purpose of studying above subject, reseacher's 96 art work made in her early adult period was analyzed. The period of ego-identity formation is classified into three periods according to a degree of ego-identity formation and defined respectively as a first period of ego-identity moratorium, a second period of ego-identity diffusion and a third period of ego-identity achievement. Characteristics of working process and symbols appeared in art works were analyzed. A technique and media of art painting, a color and a size of self image, and a symbol expressed as a subject of painting were analyzed with reference to many preceding studies in which it was tried to find out therapy factors by applying the unconscious symbol analysis to a creation process. The findings of this study were as follows. Firstly, in the first period of ego-identity moratorium, the observed person went to university and her social responsibilities such as an economical independency and social first step in getting a job were postponed. At this time of period, she made many oil painting works that expresses dreamy and fantastic worlds. The selfimage was small and a color group consisting of blue, yellow and gray was mainly used for a figure painting. Reffering to this, in the first period of identity moratorium, she expanded the environment to the abstract reality and then acquired ego-identity having a postponed roll in paintings. Secondly, the second period of ego-identity diffusion was a time when ego-identity was in chaos owing to a difficult experience of losing old roll and adapting to a new roll. In this period, acrylic was used together with oil painting and white was a dominant color owing to a painting technique of eliminations and traces, and a tree was selected as a main symbol of painting. Referring to this, in the second period of ego-identity diffusion, she acquired an individuality distinguished from others as she kept painting more and more passing through a process of roll diffusion that acts as a transition period for forming a new ego-identity of roll-loss and roll-exploration. Thirdly, in the third period of ego-identity achievement, she was asked to have diverse rolls according to changing environment around her. At this time of period, engraving technique was mainly used and other techniques such as ready made, collage, mandala and positive imagination was selected diversely in the painting work. Various painting media was used and the selfimage became bigger and a lot of flower paintings were done. Referring to this, she finally accomplished unified and firm ego-identity by unifying each individuality derived from diversity into one. As the ego-identity became firmer according to the ego-identity formation process, there were changes in the paintings. In terms of media and technique among those changes, an interest of the observed person is moved to realistic and surround matter judging from the fact that her interesting materials of paintings has been gradually shifted from oil paintings expressing abstract reality to oil paintings expressing an living goods such as objcet. The self image becomes clearer and shows a tendency to becomes gradually bigger. The color of self image at the beginning was opposing colors, a blue and a yellow, and moved into independent primary colors and various colors passing through a transition period of white and mixture colors. A subject symbol of the paintings has changed from a human being to a tree and then a tree to a flower. The observed person experienced that a feeling of uneasiness could be alleviated by experiencing mental sense of freedom in abstract reality, and then had an opportunity of ego-growth passing by a transition period in which her ego is regressed into motherhood region of automatism. Finally she went through an inner experience that she acquires a firm and realistic ego-identity through objet. The process of ego-identity formation acquired by art painting works in her early adult period coincides with a process of self-realization formed by an unification of consciousness and unconsciousness. The observed person's problematic behavior is cured and she finally could have a specialization of affect and a harmonious human relationship in a process of adaptation to reality as her personality became matured. In this case study, we can obtain data on symbolic characteristics of ego-identity formation and therapeutic factor consisting of inner experiences by observing the unconscious symbols according to psychological changes for a long period of a private individual. Thus this case study can be suggested as one way of acquiring self-examination for developing a personality and a penetrating eye for developing a technique of art therapy. Lastly, this study could contribute to a development of art therapy and be used as one of base material for the art therapy region to become an independent region for understanding mental image of a person.
