Purpose: Consumer demand for counterfeit products has grown rapidly in the past decades. The increased volume of counterfeits and increasing potential losses by genuine brand producers makes investigating counterfeit consumption evermore significant. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the self construal on purchase intent towards conspicuous and non-conspicuous counterfeit brands and the subsequent negative change in preference for the genuine brand.
Methodology: This study surveyed a sample group of 228 Dutch and Korean students with an experiment. The participants completed a paper and Google form questionnaire that was designed by adapting established scales to the current research context. The collected data was manually entered into SPSS. The research hypotheses were tested using independent-samples t-tests and two-way ANOVA’s.
Findings: Results showed that Dutch participant had indeed a stronger independent-self and Koreans a stronger interdependent-self. An interaction effect was found between self-construal and purchase intent for counterfeit brand of choice, indicating that participant with a strong interdependent self were more likely to purchase counterfeit brands of choice. Marginal significant was found on interaction effect between self-construal and purchase intent for a conspicuous or non-conspicuous counterfeit brand, indicating that participants with a strong interdependent-self construal were more likely to purchase a conspicuous counterfeit brand. Marginal significant was found on the interaction effect between self-construal and brand conspicuousness with purchase intent for genuine Louis Vuitton product in the future. Indicating that participant with a strong interdependent-self construal were less likely to purchase a genuine Louis Vuitton product in the future when they were exposed to a conspicuous counterfeit brand. No significant interaction effect was found between self-construal and conspicuousness on moral beliefs towards counterfeit brands.
Research limitations and implications: The use of a university student sample in this study was justifiable, however it may potentially limit the research findings. Students might be more inclined to purchase counterfeit products because of both their financial situation and their greater susceptibility to social influences. Exposure to a counterfeit luxury brand has a negative effect on consumers preference for the genuine luxury brand when they have a stronger interdependent self-construal. These findings indicate that these negative effects towards the genuine luxury brand might not only be in terms of immediate lost sales but also long term erosion in brand equity for the genuine luxury brand.
Originality and value: To our knowledge, this was the first study to examine the impact of luxury counterfeit consumption by consumers with strong interdependent self-construal goals on preference change for a genuine luxury brand and consequently possible long-term erosion in brand equity.
