ABSTRACT This study aimed to examine how variables such as gender, day care experience, the length of time of day care per day, a mother's parenting stress, a child's self-control, household income, and teacher-child relationships affect the physical and relational aggression of children. This study provides information which is needed to develop a program to identify children who show aggressive tendencies early, and to give them and their parents help and guidance. The study also contains some basic data for developing effective guidelines for preschoole programs related to dealing with parental stress. The subjects of this study were 338 four to five year old children who attend preschool facilities in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and the data were collected via questionnaire responses. Ann Ji-Young(2001) revision of Crnic and Greenberg(1990) questionaire from 'Parenting Daily Hassels' was used to measure the mother's parental stress, and the Child Self-control scale developed by Lee Jeong-ran(2003) and revised by Kim Eun-mi(2006) was used. The Teacher-Child Relationship Criteria developed by Pianta(1991) was used. The teachers' report questionnaires from Crick and Grotpeter(1995) measured physical and relational aggression. The data collected was analyzed by the SPSS WIN 16.0 program. The reliability of each instrument was verified, and frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation were calculated. T-test, ANOVA, post-verification (Scheffé), analysis of Pearson's correlation evaluation, and hierarchical regression analysis were used. The results of the study were as follows: First, the physical aggression of children differed between genders, however relational aggression showed no significant differences. There was a significant difference linked to day care experiences. The children who had day care experiences of longer than three years and seven months showed higher physical and relational aggressive tendencies. There were no significant differences that correlated to day care time and household income. Second, the children's physical aggression was significantly related to the mother's parenting stress, the ability to restrain behavior as part of the child's self-control, emotionality, intimacy, and conflict in the teacher-child relationships. Finally, it is apparent that the period of preschool experience, children's individual variables like self-control ability and mother's parenting stress are more influential than household income and the length of the time of preschool per day while the conflict between teacher-child relationships was the most influential factor.
