The purpose of this study was to examine parents with children attending early childhood education institutions in an effort to determine the factors affecting the low birth rate in Korean society, as those parents who are fertile have a hard time raising their children and seem to sensitively respond to the factors related to the low birth phenomenon.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, as a result of investigating the attitude of the parents toward childbirth, they just wanted to have two or three children even if having additional children wouldn't put them in financial troubles. Under the current circumstances, the biggest group that accounted for 60.4 percent hoped to have two children, and 22.0 percent hoped for just one.
The reason why the parents who had two or more children gave birth to the second and third children was checked, and the largest group that represented 54.6 percent intended to give their first children siblings. It indicated that the parents who had only one child gave birth to another child for the sake of the existing child. The majority viewed the low birth rate of Korean society as a grave phenomenon, and took a dismal view of child-rearing environments in Korean society.
Second, as a result of analyzing the awareness of the parents about low childbirth and their happiness, the women show more responses toward low childbirth than the men.
Among the factors of low childbirth, whether both of the parents were working or not made differences to their awareness of child-rearing factor and emotional factor. The dual-income families felt more sympathy toward the child-rearing factor, and the single-income families show more responses toward the emotional factor. Those who earned a smaller income show more responses toward the low-childbirth factors, especially economic and emotional factors, which were the subfactors. Concerning happiness, a larger income led to a greater happiness index.
There were gaps in the level of sympathy toward the economic factor, one of the low-birth factors, according to the number of child. The parents who had two or more children agreed more than those with only one child that the economic factor restrained childbirth.
As a result of checking the relationship between their childbirth will and the level of response toward the low-childbirth factors, the parents who didn't intend to give birth to another children show more responses toward the low-birth factors than those who were considering childbirth or planned to have another child.
Third, as a result of analyzing the links between responses toward the birth-reducing factors and happiness, stronger sympathy toward the low-birth factors was followed by less happiness, and those with a larger income show less responses toward the low-birth factors. The parents who couldn't afford to have many children or who didn't intend to give birth to a child show more responses toward the low-birth factors. Besides, those who regarded the low-birth rate as serious problem and thought the child-rearing environments of Korean society difficult show more responses toward the low-birth factors.
