This study purposed to examine the process of one‐year‐old infants’ early adjustment to childcare center and to identify strategies used in their adjustment process. For this purpose, we set research questions as follows. 1. How is the process of one‐year‐old infants’ adjustment to childcare center? 2. What strategies do one‐year‐old infants use in the process of their adjustment to childcare center? The participants in this study were 4 one‐year‐old infants attending Jayeon Childcare Center, their four mothers, and the teacher of one‐year‐old children’s class. Data were collected through participant observation and interviews, which were data collection methods for qualitative research. Participant observation was made 3‐4 times a week and a total of 67 times during the period from March 2 to July 31, 2010. In addition, we had unstructured interviews with the class teacher twice a week, and interviews with the parents once a week. Collected data were transcribed or recorded, and then, coded, categorized, analyzed and interpreted. The results of this study are as follows. First, the process of infants’ adjustment had a different order among the individual infants. In addition, the process of their adjustment appeared in a different pattern. Infants who began their adjustment from taking interest in peers adjusted themselves in order of teacher, play things, classroom, and daily tasks. Those who were curious about environment began with the exploration of environment and then proceeded in order of classroom, play things, teacher, daily tasks, and peers. Children who began their adjustment from attachment to the teacher followed the order of teacher, play things, classroom, daily tasks, and peers. Infants who took interest in environment and the teacher adjusted themselves in order of classroom, teacher, daily tasks, play things, and peers. How to start early adjustment was different according to the strategy for overcoming separation anxiety. In addition, the adjustment mechanism after overcoming separation anxiety was determined by individual infants’ interest. Second, each infant used a different adjustment strategy according to their adjustment mechanism. They used their own unique adjustment strategy. In adjustment to peers, they approached peers by establishing intimacy through caring or by feeling a pleasant emotion through imitating plays. In adjustment to play things, some adjusted themselves voluntarily to fill their needs or adjusted themselves to new play things through observation and imitation. Depending on the infants’ individual temperament and experience, they adjusted themselves through different strategies. Third, in encountering and adjusting to new environment, a major behavior was exploration. In order to understand strange environment, the infants explored it by their own way. Through the exploration of environment, they developed intimacy with the unfamiliar space and the intimacy became the base of their adjustment. It was found that infants’ exploration in the adjustment process has a meaning beyond exploration that has been understood as a characteristic of play and development. These results suggest that, for one‐year‐old infants’ adequate early adjustment to childcare center, their individuality should be acknowledged and understood and comfortable environment should be provided so that the infants overcome the fear from new environment and adjust themselves to the environment stably and pleasantly.
