The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ankle taping on range of motion(ROM), postural stability, and placebo effect before and after exercise. Nine collegiate volleyball athletes were volunteered to participate in this study. The participant's ROM, balance ability, and placebo effect were measured before application of the tape, immediately after application of the tape, and after 30 minutes of physical exercise. Ankle ROM was measured with a goniometer and recorded in 2 planes of motion: dorsiflexion to plantar-flexion and inversion to eversion. Ankle taping significantly restricted both ROM of 2 planes immediately after application, and with 30 minutes of exercise maintained the decreased ROM except left dorsiflexion to plantar-flexion range. Static balance was significantly improved both immediately after application of the tape and after 30 minutes of exercise compared with before application of the tape. Dynamic sway index tended to gradually decrease in 3 conditions, but there were no significant differences. Placebo effect was assessed by answer a questionnaire. Participants' perceptions of stability and reassurance were significantly increased immediately after application, and maintained after 30 minutes of exercise. But perception of confidence was no significant differences. This study showed ankle taping could be good method for improve athlete performance and prevent ankle injury.
