Case Study on Success Model of Sustainable Community Business : Focusing on the Rural Experience Tourism Village원문보기

Korean rural communities, contrasting to fast-growing cities, have been suffering from labor deficiency and economic recession due to a decrease in rural population. In response to this economic downturn in rural areas, Korean government developed “rural experience tourism” as a form of community business. In spite of such an effort, “rural experience tourism” has not been able to meet expected results. Furthermore, it actually resulted in harming many of the rural communities. This report studies essential elements needed for successful “rural experience tourism” through case studies of four villages in Kangwondo. In order to do so, we analyzed these four villages according to a theoretical “Sustainable Experience Tourism Community Business Model.” These four villages were selected based on their success in “rural experience tourism” businesses. A process of this study is explained below: First, The leaders classified 25 elements which were selected as important components for a successful business into ‘high,’ ‘medium,’ and ‘low’. There are 6 investment(internal/external) items of input factor, 13 community core competency items(process), 5 sustainable outcome items, and 1 reinvestment item. The village is evaluated based on these 25 elements. Deagiri Village was shown to have twenty-one ‘high’s and four ‘medium’s. Solbow Village had eighteen ‘high’s, six ‘medium’s, and one ‘low.’ Neowa Village had sixteen ‘high’s, eight ‘medium’s, and one ‘low.’ Lastly, Bamduduk Village was analyzed to possess fourteen ‘high’s, nine ‘medium’s and one ‘low.’ Second, the leaders were asked to rate each item according to its importance for business success: 1 (very important), 2 (average), 3 (not important). Then, twenty-five important items were selected and used for evaluation. We selected 15 key words that were ranked as ‘very important’ by more than 3 communities. Afterwards, we grouped those words by similar terms. The resulting groups were labeled as “cultivation of talent,” “teamwork,” “differentiation,” “networking,” “computer,” “sustainable results,” and “re-investment.” We realized a need to separate “CB leader,” who lead village residents, from people who solely work for the community business. Thus, we divided “cultivation of talent” group into “CB leader” and “cultivation of talent.” Also, we excluded “sustainable result” and “re-investment” groups as these are merely results of successful business of “rural experience tourism,” not the causes. Finally, we constructed “successful business model of ‘rural experience tourism’” based on six groups- “CB leader,” “cultivation of global talent,” “teamwork,” “differentiation,” “networking,” and “computer.”
