ABSTRACT A Study on Experience of Adult Siblings of Individuals with Intellectual Disability in Growth Period LEE, JAE RYUNG Department of Social Welfare Graduate School Soongsil University This study aimed to explore the life experience of siblings of individuals with intellectual disability and understand the meaning of the experience. Purposive sampling method was used to select participants of this study. The participants were 7 non-handicapped siblings of iindividuals with intellectual disability who used rehabilitation centers, disabled people's workshops or schools for adults with intellectual disability. This study used phenomenological research methodology, in particular applying Giorgi’s analytical method that allows a detailed examination of participants' uniqueness and structure. As a result of the data analysis, 752 meaning units related with experience of non-handicapped siblings were induced and 26 sub-constituents and 5 constituents were induced.. The 5 constituents of this study were , , , , . The statement of general descriptive structure of this study was as follows. The non-handicapped siblings accepted naturally the life with the intellectual disabilities, as they had live with their hadicapped siblings from early days. Especially, they grew up as children like adults who did everythig for themselves. When they entered kindergarten or elementary school which were the first society to them, they experienced the discrimination of society and were intimidated and ashmed of their family and themselves. They had experienced complex conflicts due to the difficulties of care and protection of the handicapped siblings, the parents's little interest and gaps between friends and themselves. They, however, couldn't share the burden of their lives with friends and family. They had been consoled from religion, and they had great help from meeting other non-handicapped siblings. They also found that the siblings with intellectual disabilities were dear to them in the course of growth and transformation. Furthermore they got to realize that they could know the preciousness of family through parents' sacrificing love. The difficulties due to the handicapped siblings made the whole family as a unit and they could learn love, humbleness, endurance, and altruism through the life whole family had overcome. They, eventually, were proud of themselves who overcame the difficulities and did thier best for parents and the handicapped siblings. The implications of this study were as follows. First, this study tried to understand the essence of experience of the non-handicapped siblings in the perspective of themselves. This can make an isssue of the life of non-handicapped siblings. Secondly, this study tried to understand the experience of non-handicapped siblings through the developmental stages. The experience was changed through developmental stages, and social services should consider the the unique experience of each developmental stages. Thirdly, this study found that non-handicapped siblings had little social support system which was reported as important factor by many researches. The social support which is not tempory but consistent should be built and individual and family counsellings should be provided. Key words : Induvidual with intellectual disability, non-handicapped sibling, experience in growth period, phenomenological research
