The purpose of this thesis is to study Charlotte Brontё’s Jane Eyre from the feminist viewpoint in relation with the nineteenth-century social situation of England. Especially this thesis focuses on the course of Jane’s self-realization. The nineteenth-century Victorian society is characterized by the strict patriarchal order and the male-dominating ideology. In the Victorian England, women as “the angel in the house” were treated as subordinate beings to men, and were forced to sacrifice themselves to be patient, obedient, humble, modest and beautiful. Women were thought to exist only as men’s possession. Chariotte Brontё expressed women's voices despite the circumstance in Jane Eyre. Jane makes efforts to free herself from suppression about her, and she displays her claim against unfair treatment of her in Gateshead Hall. Though she is young, she is not an accommodating woman, but a woman who expresses her intention. After she has grown up, Jane displays an aspect of mature woman who forgives the Reeds that suppressed her. In childhood and early puberty Jane is given a sense of the unjust social oppression and the abuses of patriarchy at Gateshead and Lowood School. Through Miss Temple and Helen Burn’s friendship, however, Jane came to be faced with the problems of love and marriage with Rochester in Thornfield and then, through St. John in Moor House. They both manifest their patriarchal nature and wish to possess and dominate her. Therefore, Jane rebels against the male authority in the society and tries to keep her identity and independent will. At last, Jane overcomes the various difficulties in the patriarchal society, accomplishes the economic and psychological independence, and gets married equally to Rochester. Though she is placed in some difficult circumstances, Jane preserves herself, and she has a surprising discovery that recognizes herself.
