(The Method of Physical Action)’은 배우를 창조적 주체자로 만든다.

The Method of Physical Action of Konstantin Stanislavsky makes actors creative subjects. His methodology, designed and assembled on stage, is a guideline to shape actors' vague acting concrete. Stanislavsky's books that deal with the Method of Physical Action are used for acting theory classes in many universities and students develop their dreams to become actors, studying his books. Nevertheless, utilization of the Method of Physical Action is insignificant in acting for film and even in studies of acting for film, most of them are centered upon the theory of Method Acting of Lee Strasberg. The Method Acting has been a generalized methodology in acting for film, and an acting theory that concentrates on the inner side of actors based on 'emotional memory' generated by experiences. Due to natures of contemporary film such as capital inflows from large companies and a genre with many different genres inserted in it, acting for film more focuses on an organic combination of the inner and the outer side and balance between the mind and the body rather than it concentrates on the inner side. Accordingly it can be suggested that the application of the Method of Physical Action requiring an organic combination of the inner and outer side is an idealistic alternative. To apply the Method of Physical Action to acting for film, in chapter 1, I examine the Method of Physical Action of the Stanislavsky system that if actors conduct logical and consistent acts by investing justification with a Given Circumstance, accordingly inner emotions and thoughts can be driven out, and other major behavioral elements such as 'magic if', Given Circumstance, Imagination, Concentration of Attention, Relaxation of Muscles, Faith and a Sense of Truth, Communion, Adaptation, Tempo and Rhythm, Emotional Memory, Unit and Objectives, the Super-Objective, Through line of Actions and etc. In chapter 2, acting for stage and acting for film are compared to each other, focusing on factors which have influences on acting such as external conditions, behaviors of actors, intervention of the physical elements, time and space continuity, plays and scenarios, audiences, producers and directors and etc. Then, I examine difference between acting for stage and for film in the Stanislavsky system. In chapter 4, based on the theory above, grafting the Method of Physical Action of the Stanislavsky system, major behavioral factors, and film technologies that have an influence on acting for film, I analyze acting by a shot and a scene of the movie Old Boy, focusing on the hero, O Dae-su. Through the analysis above, I conclude that the application of the Method of Physical Action is an appropriate measure, interlinked with the tendency of contemporary film that eclectically uses the inner side and the outer side by actors’ concrete actions; and accordingly, I expect that the Method of Physical Action is actively utilized in acting for film.
