Nowadays elements that support beauty of furniture in the Joseon Dynasty are construction of wood grain, joint and texture. A craftsman first cut the wood into the board plank, and then shaped his or her idea of what part of the wood will be used, how the wood will be used and where the wood will be used. During the process, the most beautiful part of wood grain is used for entire door panel of furniture and the rest part is employed for square lumber. When making furniture, it is craftsmen’s ability to use wood grain effectively according to the expert’s eye. These efforts are regarded as most essential figurative decoration of furniture in the Joseon Dynasty. Also, it was the best way to make good use of wood grain by maximizing beauty of it. After all, these efforts give variety to the furniture in Jeseon Dynasty. With regard to making furniture, wood forms an important factor. Wood has unique texture and wood grain. Especially, wood grain comes from not artificial patterns but patterns made by a change in nature for a long time. For this reason, human beings are deeply moved by the sight of tree. Also, they can feel the comfortable rest and reverence when they see the beauty of wood grain. Since trees have different figures according to a point of view and seasons, people can feel the variety. The characteristics of wood are classified into three types; wood grain, color of wood, and fragrance. In addition, the wood pattern is represented by the sawing method; cross-section, end grain, flat grain and edge grain. The various wood patterns are expressed in accordance with its figure and it becomes a useful material in furniture manufacture. In the case of cross-section, the wood grain has wide stripes patterns and length stripes patterns. Thus, it is not appropriate for board planks. However, geometrical figures can be obtained through cutting out the lumber using various constituents in the areas that require design pattern of modern furniture. Furthermore, wood patterns have two general forms. One is to do with growth rings and the wood patterns by the features of wood formation. The other is to do with the plain sawn and the quarter sawn. In the case of the plain sawn, it is mainly used for board planks. As it has wide texture and beautiful patterns, it is utilized for the furniture that requires figurative patterns such as top plates, door plates, middle plates, wainscot plates and drawers. On the other hand, the quarter sawn has the straight texture. Thus, it is used for the furniture that can minimize the modification such as pillars corresponding to the aggregate, the center boards in the front of a chest of drawers, and gunny sacks. Both the burl figure caused by knots on trees due to injuries during a growth period and the stump wood figure represented on the bottom of the trunk or the root have peculiar and abstract patterns. Above all, the stump wood figure is displayed frequently on zelkova trees. If it is used for door plates and middle plates, we can make high-quality furniture. Furthermore, the zebra-print wood pattern, which is one of the pigment patterns, is occurred by damage cause by fungi. It is displayed frequently on the persimmon trees containing ink patterns. Because the persimmon trees have the pattern looking like a landscape painting, it has excellent decorative effect. Accordingly, it is used for door plates, middle plates, wainscot plates and drawers. Also, wood tends to be easily affected by physical circumstances such as the rate of expansion, thermal conductivity and a reflective index. Thus, modifications should be prevented through the wood drying. The wood drying has two ways; the nature seasoning and the artificial seasoning. The nature seasoning refers to the method that wood is dried in the shade by wind for long years. In order to use for making furniture, wood should be dried for five to ten years according to kinds and conditions of the wood. On the other hand, the artificial seasoning is used by chemicals or dryer. The more wood is dried the more strength the wood has. Accordingly, furniture should be made by various wood drying ways. Also, the inherent grain and patterns of wood should be selected. The shape of wood and the proportion of the color should be leaded appropriately. Because such construction becomes an element which can maximize aesthetic value of sculpture, those things should be considered with care. The size comparison of furniture in Joseon dynasty gets divided into general furniture size and the other’s size. The kinds of cabinets are classified into head cabinets, wardrobes, wardrobe chests, book shelves, and cupboards. The rest of furniture is compared according to the size such as suitcases, clothes chests with a hinged front flap, desks, dining tables, stationary chests, boxed and chests. In addition, furniture in Joseon dynasty is analyzed according to the size of door plates, top plates whose width and length are recognizable, the legs which support the furniture and the side panel. Sub compartments are excluded since they do not have the door plate. The diverse kinds of wood used in manufacturing furniture in Joseon dynasty include pine trees, zelkova trees, persimmon trees and chinaberry trees. The wood grain of persimmon trees, zelkova trees and pine trees is frequently used. Paulownia trees mostly are used for the inner parts of furniture. The basic frame of furniture is pillars, the center board in the front of a chest of drawers and gunny sacks. These parts are very important since they express the structure of furniture and stable proportion. Thus, the straight grain of the quarter-sawn board whose heart wood grain part is narrow is used. Plain-sawn boards, burl figures, and stump wood figures are mainly used. And pine trees zelkova trees and chinaberry trees are primarily used. In addition, the best wood grain is selected for the middle plate and the wainscot plate as they express the most beautiful figuration. The mainly used wood is pine trees, zelkova trees and ink-persimmon trees. In the case of pine trees, they are easily found. And zelkova trees can be obtained from shade trees and surrounding mountains. Ink-persimmon trees decorating with ink pattern are very rare and cannot be found easily. Since the wood grain of ink-persimmon trees carries the beauty of the Orient as if artists drew landscape paints, cabinetmakers considered the trees as most valuable wood. Cabinetmakers made efforts to get the ink-persimmon trees. However, all the ink-persimmon trees do not have beautiful patterns. The ink-persimmon trees having the wonderful patterns were regarded as a lucky tree since cabinetmakers do not have many opportunities to meet the trees. A the result of comprehensive analysis on furniture in Joseon dynasty, the furniture shows the simple shape and contrast of wood grain well-matched with similar colors. On the whole, the furniture in Joseon dynasty represents uniformity and stability well. Also, it makes a favorable impression as if the tree stood there and nature was transferred to the house. The furniture keeps the traces of time and room. The appealing factors of furniture in Joseon dynasty can be summarized into these words; nature, generousness and comfort. Also, the characteristic of the furniture is its thinner thickness than Japanese furniture. Thus, it requires less material sand shows moderate shape. Due to the soundness of the furniture, its value is evaluated highly. The new design suggestion applying the features of wood grain to furniture in Joseon is proposed by the following form; cabinet design, trunk design, cedar chest design, stationery chest design, table design and subcompartment design suggestion. The suggestion was not the form reappearing the shape of furniture in Joseon dynasty. Instead, it proposes the design that simplifies the furniture’s overall impression in a modern style and utilizes various patterns of wood grain. First, the suggestion visualizes the natural wood grain to modern design patterns. Second, the suggestion presents the shape of furniture in Joseon dynasty in the form of modern furniture Third, the suggestion presents modern design by classifying the furniture in Joseon dynasty. The purpose of design concept is to show the new direction where furniture-users can choose different patterns and shapes according to the needs, taste and sensitivity. The furniture design trend in 21C should set the goal at stimulating consumer’s needs and sensitivity through the diversity. Thus, this design suggestion reinterprets the image, philosophy and the culture of furniture in Joseon dynasty into modern culture. As a result, the furniture in Joseon dynasty’s shape is designed in the form of modern furniture. One of the important design elements is to try to use the wood grain and the pattern harmoniously while finding a developing new design method. This thesis’s objective is to represent the ways of using wood grain in the future furniture manufacturing by analyzing on the philosophy and application of wood grain of furniture in Joseon dynasty. This research suggests the new design trend applying the wood grain to furniture manufacture by analyzing on correlation between the elements in accordance with the shape of furniture in the Joseon dynasty and wood grain. In the future, blended furniture would be born into the world when the wood grain is applied to modern industrial arts appropriately.
