The purpose of this study was to examine Pyungtaek Nongak and Namsadang Pungmul of Ansung in terms of the order of Panje, Garak, Euimul, costume and ornaments in an effort to identify the unique characteristics of the Pungmuls of the two regions. The findings of the study were as follows: First, in regard to the order of Panje, there were differences between Pyungtaek Nongak and Namsadang Pungmul of Ansung. In the former, Ohbangjin came next to Dangsanbeolrim. In the latter, Ohbangjin came before Dangsanbeolrim, and Gasaebeak and Sorigut were performed, which weren't performed in the current Panje of the former. Besides, Milbeoggu was performed as well, which wasn't performed in the Panje of the former, either. Second, when the Garak of the two was compared, there were the same Garaks such as 'Jajingarak' in the two, but the two included different Garaks that had the same name, and there were similar Garaks that had a different name at the same time. But even for the same Garaks, the number of Garak, rhythm and intensity were different, no matter the Garaks had the same or different name. Third, as a result of comparing the Euimul and costume of Pyungtaek Nongak and Namsadang Pungmul of Ansung, no difference was found in Euimul, and the costume of the two was nearly the same. But there were two differences between the two. In Pyungtaek Nongak, Sangshoi wore a deep blue vest like the other Chibaes, but in Namsadang Pungmul of Ansung, Sangshoi wore a black vest unlike the other Chibaes. In the former, leggings weren't used, but the latter made use of leggings. As Pyungtaek and Ansung were adjacent to each other, it's expected that the two Pungmuls would be the same in large part in terms of Garak and Panje. However, there were differences between the two in the order of Panje, the name of Garaks, the number of sub-Garaks, intensity, rhythm, Euimul and costume. The findings of the study showed that although Pyungtaek and Ansung belonged to the same cultural bloc, Pyungtaek Nongak and Namsadang Pungmul of Ansung made a different region-specific development in terms of Panje and Garak. Yet this study had some limitations. Just the basic Garaks of Janggu were compared without covering Gyeop-Garak and the Garaks of the other musical instruments. In the future, more extensive research should be implemented to produce more accurate results. The national and local governments should offer sustained assistance to pass Pyungtaek Nongak and Namsadang Pungmul of Ansung onto the next generations, which are part of our valuable cultural heritage. Those who are interested in the conservation of cultural heritage should try to hand down the two to next generations as well, and people in general should pay attention to that, too.
