Many existing conventional wastewater treatment plants(WWTP) are to be upgraded for biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Increasing concerns for sensitive receiving water are expected to drive effluent nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) limits to exceptionally low levels for several WWTP throughout Korea. These limits will require a new generation of effective treatment strategies to control soluble and non-soluble discharges. This study was focused on the development and the evaluation of submerged membrane bioreactor(MBR) and sulfur denitrification to remove nitrogen and phosphorus in the combined biological and chemical processes. MBR was a combination of suspended growth activated sludge process and membrane equipment, where membranes are used for solids and liquid separation which is traditionally accomplished using secondary clarifiers. Also, it is possible to obtain full nitrification of the high ammonia nitrogen concentration because biomass, slow growing nitrifiers, can be retained in membrane bioreactor. Sulfur denitrification process utilize autotrophic denitrifiers, such as Thiobacillus denitrificans and Thiomicrospira denitrificans, to reduce nitrate to nitrogen gas. The autotrophic denitrification process using elemental sulfur appears to be more economical and easier to control for wastewater with a low C/N ratio than heterotrophic denitrification. In this thesis, a method for simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus by adding coagulant to the sulfur denitrification process coupled to the membrane bioreactor was proposed. The proposed processes were investigated through a long-term experiment for 350days in a pilot plant with a capacity 10㎥/day which was fed by wastewater. The pilot plant consisted of four unit processes in series: screen, flow equalization tank, MBR and SDR(Sulfur Denitrification Reactor). Chemicals(alum) for phosphorus precipitation was added in the effluent of MBR before being fed to SDR during phaseⅡ operation(160 days). PhaseⅠ operation(190days) was not added by chemicals. As the results of water quality analysis, the average concentration in the effluent was 3.8mg/ℓ for BOD, 7.6 mg/ℓ for CODMn, 4.7 mg/ℓ for SS, 4.9 mg/ℓ for T-N and 1.0 mg/ℓ for T-P, respectively during phaseⅡ operation. And their mean treatment efficiency was 97.2%, 91.3%, 96.3%, 87.8% and 75.6%, respectively. Implementing high efficient removal of nitrogen without injection of an external organic carbon source or internal return and phosphorus removal by addition of alum(10mg/ℓ), it was concluded that the proposed processes was suitable for the wastewater treatment. But a slight increase of BOD, COD and SS concentration was detected in the effluent of SDR because of the high cell yield of the autotrophic microorganisms. In MBR, the average concentration of NH4+-N was 0.3mg/ℓ in the effluent of MBR and nitrification efficiency was 98.7%. It was observed that decomposition of organic substances and high efficient nitrification were simultaneously done in MBR. In nitrification reaction, 8.2 mg alkalinity(as CaCO3) were consumed on oxidizing 1 mg of NH4+-N to NO3--N. Therefore, alkalinity have to be supplied to SDR to control pH and sulfur denitrification. The most effective and commonly used alkalinity source is NaHCO3. To supply alkalinity in SDR, alkalinity of 150 mg/ℓ in the form of NaHCO3 was continuously fed by adjustable peristaltic pump in the effluent of MBR. The average concentration of NO3--N in the effluent of MBR was 26.4 mg/ℓ by high nitrification. The average concentration of NO3--N in the effluent of SDR was 3.4 mg/ℓ by sulfur autotrophic denitrification. In sulfur denitrification reaction, 2.3 mg alkalinity (as CaCO3) were required to remove 1 mg of NO3--N. To remove phosphorus containing wastewater, aluminum or ferric iron salts can be added to the primary clarifier, secondary clarifier, tertiary clarifiers, or directly injected into aeration tank. In this study, a series of jar tests were conducted to find optimum coagulation condition and to enhance removal efficiency of phosphorus. The optimum volumetric concentration of alum was 10mg/ℓ. In pilot plant, 10 mg/ℓ of alum were continuously fed by peristaltic pump in the effluent of MBR having very low turbidity and organic substances during phaseⅡ operation(160 days). Alum was mixed with the wastewater using line mixer to ensure reaction with soluble phosphorus and formation of precipitates. And then the mixed wastewater was directly fed into SDR which was packed with elemental sulfur only. The addition of alum as a coagulant in the effluent of MBR enhanced the removal of phosphorus in SDR without clarifier. During phaseⅠ operation(190days), only 27.3% of total P was removed without addition of alum. But 75.6% of total P was removed by 10mg/ℓ of alum addition during phaseⅡ operation(160days). It resulted that Al/P ratio was 1.85:1 with an average effluent concentration of 1.0 mg T-P/ℓ. This study was investigated to have the effect of denitrification efficiency and T-P removal by addition of alum in the effluent of MBR. Characteristics of T-N and T-P removal were compared without and with the addition of alum. T-N removal without and with the addition of alum was 92.1% and 87.8%, respectively and denitrification efficiency was 93.8% and 87.1%, respectively. It was found that inhibition of autotrophic denitrification was not significantly affected by the addition of chemicals(10mg/ℓ of alum) to SDR. This was indicated by the sulfate production rate or sulfate concentration in the effluent of SDR because sulfate is one of the end products of sulfur autotrophic denitrification reaction. In this study, the average sulfate production per 1 mg of NO3--N consumed was 7.75mg, which is higher than the theoretical value of 7.54 mg. Floc formation by the addition of coagulant, excess growth of biomass and entrapment of nitrogen gas bubbles can be reduced the activit
