This study focuses on the fact that picture materials in Korean language textbooks can play important roles for the activation of students' response to the literature and design the models for Transaction Reading of Texts and Pictures as a concrete means of the application of picture materials in Korean language textbooks. This study also aims to make students share the pleasure, their lives and literatures through literary experiences and sufficiently realize the possibilities and aims of literary education. The focuses of discussions in this study are as follows. Firstly, Rosenblatt's theory of literature, as a principle of the activation of literature response, will be examined and the relations between the literature response activation and picture materials will be discussed to deduce transaction reading of texts and pictures. Secondly, for the activation of literature response, the elements of the model for Transaction Reading of Texts and Pictures and the elements for teaching and learning activities will be designed for the application to actual literature class. For this, in Chapter Ⅱ, the principle of literature response activation of picture materials is examined and as a strategy for the application of picture materials, transaction reading of texts and pictures are suggested. First of all, in section 1, the readers' position and Rosenblatt's theory of literature response are examined being focused on their main concepts and then how the picture materials can contribute to the literature response activation are discussed through the educational functions of picture materials. In section 2, the concept of literature picture materials are clearly established and as a strategy for active reading of literature text picture materials, Transaction Reading of Texts and Pictures are deduced for explaining of its types and meaning. In section Ⅲ, the model for Transaction Reading of Texts and Pictures are designed for literature response activation and its concrete applications are sought. The Transaction Reading of Texts and Picturesis a teaching and learning model to promote transaction between readers and texts, and it is designed by establishing the factors such as 'the activation of background knowledge' and 'inquiring of texts' in the process before reading and the factors such as 'transaction reading of writings and picture' , 'promotion of readers literary experiences' and 'arousing of readers' first reaction' in the middle of reading process and the factors such as 'review and expansion of reaction' and 'internalizaton' in the process after reading. And then, the model for Transaction Reading of Texts and Pictures has been actually applied to the 3rd year students in the elementary school for 5 weeks by targeting 10 literary texts. Through the above discussion, following conclusions have been reached. Firstly, the model for Transaction Reading of Texts and Pictures enables aesthetic literary experience and as a result, the learners' literature response has been activated. Through the activities such as 'presentation of own experiences related to the works' and 'expression through plays and body languages by becoming characters in the works', the literature responses of the learners have been variously expressed. The minds of the characters could be sympathized and the meaning of the works could be constituted by the reflection of them on to their own knowledge. Also, through the conversation with skillful readers(teachers) and interaction between students, the response expressed incompletely could be deepened through corrective process and was extended to the complete literature response based on the understanding of the texts. Secondly, through the application of the strategy for the transaction reading of texts and pictures and the exchange of opinions of translation communities, the complete understanding of the works could be reached. The students actively expressed their spontaneous and individual responses that were established through aesthetic literary experience activities in the model for Transaction Reading of Texts and Pictures. Through this process, the significant differences between the learner themselves and other learners have been recognized and the works have been read again. Through transaction reading of texts and pictures, students could find the foundation for their own response and deduce what have not been explicitly revealed in texts and the translation based on the text were enabled. This has something in common with the essence of Rosenblatt's literature response. Thirdly, the students' positive attitudes toward literary education could be strengthened. Through the model for Transaction Reading of Texts and Pictures, the students could feel the pleasure from the literature and their interests in other literary works have been enhanced. As the students are the principle agent, they actively participated in various literary experiences in the process of reading, teaching and learning of transaction and as a result, their concentration and initiatives have been enhanced. Also, for the students who lacked in the confidences in the response because they rarely have exchanged activities with other students and rarely expressed their appreciation for the works, the confidences in the activities after reading were restored though the conversation and rumination of their own responses. Fourthly, the students themselves used the strategies through transaction reading model and sought literary works to read. This is because that the teachers' guidance and postscripts over the entire class have been naturally internalized and mastered by the students. When using reading strategies and performing of reading, the understanding of the works are improved and the depth of thinking also are deepened. To the students who have been read poetry and performed the activities after reading without understanding of reading method, the mode
