Due to the increase of various accidents and acute illnesses, patients admitted to the emergency are increasing rapidly. Admission to the emergency with unexpected accidents or illnesses brings family members high level of stress and anxiety. This study is to identify the anxiety that family members experience depending on the degree of patients' disease severity and to provide the basic materials to develop an effective nursing intervention to maintain the family functions and cope with the patients' disease. Subjects for this study were 171 family members of patients admitted to the emergency room in a general hospital in S city. In this study, disease severity measurement tools by Wilson (1988) and anxiety measurement tools developed by Volicer and Bohanan (1975) and then modified by Sunkyung Yang (1999) were used. The reliability of anxiety measurement tools was Cronbach's α=.92. The data analysis was performed by using PASW program. For general characteristics and degree of disease severity, the actual number and percentage were used. For the degree of subjects' anxiety, the mean and the standard deviation were compared. For anxiety of patient’s family members in ER and the degree of disease severity depending on general characteristics, t-test and ANOVA were conducted. The results of this study are as follows. 1. In the general characteristics, the mean age of the patients' family members was 39 years old, 54.4% females, 70.2% married and 51.5% with no-religion. In terms of occupations, 26.9% were housewives, 24% freelancers and 22.8% workers, respectively. 47.4% of the patients' family members felt "patients could go home once first-aid was administered properly." The relations to the patient within the family were 39.2% housewives, 28.1% children, and 21.0% husbands, respectively. Women patients were 60.2% and he mean age was 44 years old. The cause of admission to ER was 60.8 % "sudden illnesses" and 21.1% "accidents," respectively. The process of patients' treatment was 52.6% "waiting for tests" and the arrival time to ER was 21.0% "between 8:00 a.m. and noon." 2. The degree of patients disease severity in ER was divided into three groups: urgent, somewhat-urgent, and not-urgent. The highest group was somewhat-urgent, 80.1%, while the urgent was 13.5% and not-urgent was 6.4%, respectively. 3. Results from measured anxiety of patients' family members in ER showed the mean anxiety of 2.1. Anxiety related to physical condition was the highest mean of 2.5. Upon analyzing the questionnaires, "symptoms will get worse" was 2.9. Also, "patients will feel painful upon the examination and treatment" was 2.8 and "patient may get a serious illness" was 2.6. Accordingly, higher anxiety showed on physical condition. In contrast, the response on "it’s difficult to take care of patient" was 1.5 showing low anxiety. 4. In anxiety of patients' family members in ER depending on the general characteristics, all variables of caregivers' age (F =2.71, p=.032), caregivers' gender (t=-2.26, p=.025), relationship to patients (F=3.96, p<0.05), position within the family of patients (F=3.43, p=.018) and the cause for admission to ER (F=6.12, p<.05) showed significant differences in physical condition. Also caregivers’ occupation (F=2.45, p=.036) showed significant differences in healthcare. 5. In anxiety of patients' family members in ER depending on the degree of disease severity, physical condition (F=4.65, p=.011) and he hospital environment (F=4.63, p=.011) showed significant differences. Especially in the physical condition, urgent group(2.8) was statistically higher than that of the not-urgent group(2.2) in the degree of disease severity and urgent group(2.3) was statistically higher than that of the somewhat-urgent group(1.9) and not-urgent group(1.8) in the hospital environment. We could identify the degree of anxiety of patients' family members depending on the degree of disease severity through this study and realize that patients' family members experience a variety of anxiety in ER. Based on the results, nursing intervention could be considered and devised to reduce the anxiety of patients' family members in ER. It is very important that the speedy and accurate first aid be given depending on the degree of disease severity, attitude of health care workers to patients and the faith in health care workers be formed, comfortable and safe hospital environment be provided and social support base be rendered. We can understand anxiety of patients' family members in ER, carry out the appropriate family support and further accompany the quality of patients' care by using these results.
