Linguistic interaction and formation of identity in the class for a child of multicultural family : focused on the case for a child with Filipina원문보기

The purpose of this study is to investigate linguistic interaction and identity which are the most serious problems for children of multicultural families through specific examples and to give suggestions for educational supports necessary in forming positive identity for children of multicultural families. The subject was a child in 2nd grade of elementary school whose mother is Filipina and linguistic interaction of the child had been observed for 22 months in his classroom. His mother did not communicate with the child in not only Korean but also Tagalog or English during his infancy. This caused him to be not good at understanding and expression of language even in 2nd grade. Furthermore, this character that he was not good at using language as a basic tool for interaction negatively affected his identity. The procedure of study from the beginning to the end is as follows. The researcher as a class teacher for the child in 2009 observed overall language and school life. The child could hardly participate the classes due to lack of language capacity and also continued unusual behaviours to draw interest from classmates. In the first semester, linguistic characteristic and unusual behaviours of the child were widely observed and in the second semester, observation was conducted focused on linguistic interaction. In 2010, the researcher as a specialist teacher for English and Physical education continued observation in the class 4 times every week and lunch times etc. As the child met new classmates and class teachers, and learned English which his mother can speak well, the possibility of change in identity was observed with careful attention. In addition, learning of Korean language for the mother of the child, interview with the child's neighbors were performed for further understanding on the child. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the characteristics of linguistic interaction of the child were 'pursuit of interest and neglect', 'lack of expression and communication breakdown', and 'efforts for communication and selective response.' The largest purpose of child speech was pursuit of interest but most classmates neglected this. The causes of such neglect were alienation from dialogue scenes because of lack of language expression, disregard caused by poor language and learning, being excluded by lack of social skill of the child and prejudice from classmates etc. His lack of language expression caused the other's communication breakdown in many cases. Because of his very poor language skill, he used the word, 'that' by not finding appropriate basic vocabularies or used sentences which did not show sequence in many cases. He also could not find proper topics or change the topics on time. As a result, he could not lead dialogue or influence on others. Notwithstanding these difficulties, he continued efforts for communication. The responses from classmates were selective. When he talked about his own story or pursued the relationship with himself, they passively responded. On the other hand, when he talked about philippine or English for which the child was superior than others, they positively responded. Second, the child showed identities such as 'alien', 'infant', and 'potential able child.' The identity of alien is one the child most clearly recognized as shown in expression like 'I do not have a friend and I dislike it.'This identity was formed by being excluded from his classmates caused by lack of language expression, differences in appearance and behaviours etc. The child gave money to some children or followed the other's request so that they could play with him. But most children did not have an equal relationship with him or share friendship. The identity of infant is one showing desire for regression caused by lack of confidence in meeting developmental expectation as a 'child in 10 years old' and status expectation as a 'student in 3rd grade.' Although he was 10 years old, he denied identity fit to age. So he though himself as a helpless baby frequently saying 'i cannot do it' or whining. In addition, though he was student in the 3rd grade, he showed the aspect of denying identity as a student, because he did not properly prepare school supplies and did not reflect on teacher's scolding. The identity of potential able child is related to special circumstances and ability unique to a child of multicultural families. There are advantages like 'experiences of different culture', easiness in learning dual languages', 'openness to human race', and 'advantage rooted in other national character'. That is, he experienced the culture of his mother's nation, he can easily learn the language his mother uses, he had small repulsion with foreigners, and he had an advantage rooted from national character of his mother's nation. Third, Educational support for forming positive identity for children of multicultural families is divided to support for children of multicultural families and support for general children. As for support for children of multicultural families, first of all, strengthening of language expression for communication and learning. Instruction for social custom and peer relation are required so that they can adapt to school well and fill desire for relationship. In addition, their potentials should be developed through active connection with family. As for support for general children, first of all, they should be taught about the influence on the other's identity by language so that they can talk with attitude of being considerate for others. The education for relieving prejudice about culture and human race is necessary and it is also important to change recognition on children of multicultural families towards positive one by making them understand potentials of children of multicultural families.
