Abstract Economic Evaluation of Granular Activated Carbon On the Regeneration Cycle Woo, Taek Myong (Supervisor Kim, Gi Tae) Dept. of Environmental Engineering Graduate School of Seoul National University of Science and Technology Granular activated carbon(GAC) in accordance with the demand for installations of advanced drinking water treatment facilities is expected to increase its usage gradually and thus to increase its prices as well. As alternatives, it could be considered that installation of self-regeneration facilities, regeneration consignment or replacement of new granular activated carbon should be taken. In order to investigate the aptness of each scheme, carried out was their economical efficiency evaluation. Economical efficiency evaluation was carried out in four stages from 10,000 ㎥ to 40,000 ㎥, depending on the amount of granular activated carbon. Granular activated carbon regeneration cycle was chosen as four years based on the result of operations in drinking water treatment plant operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and K-water. Economical efficiency of the regeneration schemes was inflected on the boundary of annual usage of 3200 ㎥ for the granular activated carbon. The regeneration consignment is found more economical in events less than 3,200 ㎥ per year and the self-regeneration is an economical way in more than the mount. When the installation of the regeneration facilities is assumed for the drinking water treatment plants, which are operated by in Seoul Metropolitan and K-water in the realm of the Han River watershed, only one point of the drinking water treatment plant of the fifteen places surveyed have showed that feasibility of this regeneration facility is to be economical. When installing an GAC regeneration facilities should be taken into account various factors such as the amount of annual regeneration, spare land and transport costs. Therefore, it is considered to be more efficient to install and to operate jointly in conjunction with the adjacent drinking water treatment plants than to install and operate each of the drinking water treatment plants. In addition, Estimating annual operating costs have shown that more increasement in the annual amount of regeneration is, much savings in facility installation expense and operating cost are made. In the future when operating the advanced drinking water treatment facilities, we might expect to establish the most cost-effective method from the GAC regenerations or replacement by new GAC with capitalizing on the results obtained from this study.
