A study has been conducted to investigate the removal of pharmaceutical residues, which were Caffeine (CFE) and Mefenamic acid (MFA), with filtered water by using ozonation, and to propose modified method for calculating available kinetic constant kR which is second-order rate constant and represents the direct and indirect ozone reactions.
The modified method calculated the constants from CT values determined from initial ozone concentration. The initial ozone concentration was calculated from the subtraction of an instantaneous ozone demand (ID), which represents fast reaction between filtered water and ozone, from real initial ozone concentration. All of ozonation experiments were performed in bench-scale at pH 7 and 20 ℃.
First, the IDs for the water properties were determined from ozonation with the filtered water at initial ozone concentration of 1, 2, 3 and 4 mg/L. The IDs of 1, 2, 3 and 4 mg/L were 0.112, 0.285, 0.518 and 0.521 mg/L respectively.
Next, the constants were determined from respective ozonation for added CFE and MFA with the filtered water at initial ozone concentration of 2 and 4 mg/L. The constants of CFE and MFA at initial ozone concentration of 2 mg/L and 4 mg/L from the established method were 1.46 × 103 L·M-1·s-1, 1.51 × 103 L·M-1·s-1 and 6.72 × 103 L·M-1·s-1 respectively. On the other hand, the constants from the modified method were 1.67 × 103 L·M-1·s-1, 1.68 × 103 L·M-1·s-1 and 7.44 × 103 L·M-1·s-1 respectively. The constants of MFA at 4mg/L were not able to determine due to MFA was not detectable.
Then, the application of the calculated constants was evaluated from ozonation for added mixture of CFE and MFA with the filtered water at initial ozone concentration of 4 mg/L. the comparison the real CT values with the sum of CT values determined from each of the removal results and kR were that the CT values of the contact time with ozone within 15 seconds were nearly accorded as 0.636 mg·min·L-1 and 0.638 mg·min·L-1, but the CT values of the contact time after 15 seconds were not accorded. However, the removal rate of the contact time within 15 seconds was that CFE and MFA were 82 and 93.9% of total removal rate for the ozonation respectively. Therefore, the calculated constants could be used to apply relatively exact prediction for the removal rate in the case of injection for ozone at a time.
As a result, the kR of CFE and MFA for filtered water in the study were determined as 1.68 × 103 L·M-1·s-1 and 7.44 × 103 L·M-1·s-1 respectively. The calculated constants from the modified method were stable for the initial ozone concentration because the modified method considered ID which is changed according to initial ozone concentration and reflects water properties, so application of the modified method can be helpful for more accurate prediction. In addition, ozonation removed 90% of caffeine and mefenamic acid within the CT value of 1.1 mg·min·L-1 and 0.25 mg·min·L-1.
