The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of cognitive functionㆍfunctional fitnessㆍblood lipids and risk factors of dementia in elderly women after 12 weeks of combined exercise. Subjects consist of 21 elderly women (control: 10, exercise: 11) aged 73 to 78 years in B city with cognitive function scores of more than 25. Exercise equivalent to 11-12 RPE during the first period (week 1-4) and exercise equivalent to 13-14 RPE during the second period (week 5-12) was applied for a total of 12 weeks, 3 times a week, and 60 minutes at a time. Data were analyzed repeatedly with ANOVA for comparison and interaction between groups. The comparison for change within groups was analyzed using a paired t-test of the SPSS package 14.0 program with alpha level of p<.05 for all tests of significance. The results of comparative analysis are as follows;
1. Cognitive function
There was an interaction effect between groups and periods for cognitive function. Therefore, cognitive function showed the effect of exercise.
2. Functional fitness
Regarding the interaction effect between groups and periods according to the physical factors stated above, a significant difference was observed in BMI, muscular endurance/strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance. However, the arm curl test showed no interaction effect between groups and periods.
3. Blood lipids
1) T-C There was an interaction effect between groups and periods for T-C. Therefore, T-C showed the effect of exercise.
2) LDL-C There was no interaction effect between groups and periods.
3) HDL-C There was an interaction effect between groups and periods for HDL-C. Therefore, HDL-C showed the effect of exercise.
4) TG There was an interaction effect between groups and periods for TG. Therefore, TG showed the effect of exercise.
4. Risk factors of dementia
1) β-amyloid There was an interaction effect between groups and periods for β-amyloid. Therefore, β-amyloid showed the effect of exercise.
2) insulin There was no interaction effect between groups and periods. 3) DHEAs There was an interaction effect between groups and periods for DHEAs. Therefore, DHEAs showed the effect of exercise.
4) BDNF There was an interaction effect between groups and periods for BDNF. Therefore, BDNF showed the effect of exercise.
In conclusion, a combined exercise program was found to have a positive effect on elderly women's cognitive function, functional fitness, blood lipidsㆍrisk factors of dementia. A combined exercise program may be helpful to reduce the incidence of dementia and behavioral complications.
