Chaconne is a kind of variation and one of important instrumental forms during the baroque period. It is dance music in slow triple time with stress on the 2nd beat, and is characterized by the repetition of theme mainly in the bass. In the Coethen period, J.S. Bach composed a chaconne with 5 movements in Partita for Solo Violin No. 2. This music consists of 8 measure-long theme and 32 variations and a coda. It was arranged many times for other instruments by later composers. Among them, I compare the piano transcriptions composed by Brahms and Busoni in this study. Specifically, Brhams' Chaconne was the arrangement for the left hand only. First, Brahms’ chaconne was influenced by his teacher Marxsen who wrote music for the left hand, and was arranged for Clara Schumann whose right hand was wounded. The music is so faithful to the original that it seems to be transcribed directly from the violin music. On the contrary, Busoni’s chaconne, though following the structure of the original, fully utilized the expressiveness of the piano. It was arranged more technically and ornately than Brahms’ one using a wide range of sound, varied rhythm, various dynamics, detailed tempo instructions, pedal point, una corda pedal, etc. This study purposed to make a comparative analysis of Brahms’ and Busoni’s chaconnes, which were piano arrangements of Bach’s chaconne, to find what arrangement techniques were used and how that techniques affected the music.
