As We know, Ernest Miller Hemingway is generally acknowledged as one of the most significant writers of the 20th century. In 1953, he won the Pulitzer Prize with The Old Man and the Sea for his epic account of man’s struggle against the forces of nature. He was also awarded the Novel Prize for Literature in the following year 1954.
The Old Man and the Sea is very simple and interesting story written at the age of 53 after his thought had reached maturity. Throughout The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago is given heroic proportions. This novel shows the courage, the strength and the will of man: fighting against the forces of nature occupies two-thirds of the whole novel.
Hemingway believes that to live is to fight. If it is true, we can’t escape from the bitterness of life, but we need some moral rules to control them. They are the belief, the courage and the endurance, all of which Santiago shows us in this novel. But it is not Hemingway’s inherent Stoicism, for we can see many kinds of stoicism in other novels. His stoicism is the stoicism with ecstasy.
From the beginning to the end, the theme of solidarity and interdependence pervades the action and provides the struggle with framework within which Santiago’s heroic individualism and his fellow creatures appear and function. Santiago depends upon the young boy, Manolin, Dimaggio and Lions. These devices offer him courage when he meets a deadly trauma, so he can fight against nature.
After all, he has learned much in a few days of fishing voyage though he suffered a lot. He is now able to pronounce a judgement upon the inscrutable human existence and men’s destiny. His failure has thus turned out to be his moral victory.
