Early piano education is an important process of laying foundation for music development, affecting cognitive sensuous development of children. The objective of this study is to help piano teachers arouse children's interest in music and maximize the effect of piano instruction by selecting more desirable and suitable instructional materials. This study reviews and compares several piano textbooks for early piano instruction. This study explored the effect of early piano instruction on development of music concept in children as well as the meaning and significance of early piano instruction. Specifically, this study analyzed features, construction, score reading, tonal rhythm, meter and harmony of piano textbooks, identified strong and weak points as well as points to be improved of each textbook and presented recommendations about effective early piano education. To begin with, 'Beyer', a piano textbook traditionally used, is suited for repetitive learning since it contains advanced level of contents as well as easy level of contents and is based on functional harmony. However, as this textbook provides little recognition about clef, focuses on how to play the piano and is designed to make the left hand perform accompaniment and the right hand perform melody, it is not suited for practicing balanced piano performance. 'Alfred' completed by three music educationalists provides illustrations and explanations in detail. This textbook contains easy musical works so that children at the beginning stage can learn the piano with pleasure and deals with lesson, technique, theory, music dictation, etc. extensively. However, as this textbook tends to become too drastically difficult when moving from a level to another level and requires too much time and effort for learning, these factors can often cause children to give up this textbook to select an alternative textbook and give pressure or burden to children. 'Bastien', which presents songs with suited lyrics and contains elements to arouse interest in children including various colors, can induce children to become accustomed to touching on black keys and relieve children of fear about black keys. Furthermore, this textbook can help children develop basic knowledge and skills about music in a comprehensive manner. However, children lacking specialized knowledge about music find it difficult to understand or follow this textbook for themselves. 'Adventures' consisting of 4 volumes, which is colorfully designed in accordance with a recent trend and considers age and level, can arouse interest in children. And this textbook helps children do away with stereotyped ideas linking a certain scale with a specific finger and further think of each sound as independent concept correctly. However, this textbook is not agreeable to the Korean sentiment in that it is composed of four volumes and requires too much time and tuition fee to master. This study compared and analyzed features of leading piano textbooks and found out strengths and weaknesses of each book. It would be more effective if a teacher does not insist on a specific textbook for early piano education but selects a textbook among existing piano textbooks or edits a textbook on his or her own, considering individual traits and learning ability of children. Furthermore, early piano education needs to be designed and implemented so that children can enjoy music and participate in music activities actively.
