The purpose of this study was to examine wandering behaviors of the elderly with dementia at elderly care facilities, thus finding out the current status of supportability and safety of wandering space for facility residents and looking into the convenience of management for the control and support of the elderly with dementia in wandering space, from the aspect of managers. Study methods consisted of literature review, site assessment and observation and questionnaire survey. As for literature review, the investigator examined the conception of dementia, the number of the elderly with dementia in Korea and the current status of domestic elderly care facilities, together with the conception and pattern of wandering space, in order to understand the elderly with dementia. In addition, frequently occurred problems in the environment for the elderly with dementia were examined, together with the essential design elements of wandering space for the elderly with dementia. As for site assessment, the investigator used a check list and audited the physical environment of 7 elderly care facilities in Seoul. As for observation-based investigation, the behaviors of facility residents were examined in order to understand the problems that occurred in the wandering space of elderly care facilities. And via a questionnaire survey of facility workers at study subject facilities, the current status and facility workers' perception of wandering space and their job-satisfaction were examined. Study survey was carried out over the period from May 24 to June 2, 2011 and 153 sheets of questionnaire were distributed. Collected data of 133 respondents were used for analysis. Data were processed with the SPSS 18.0 program, and such analytic techniques as frequency, percentage, mean, multiple response analysis, chi-square test and correlation analysis were carried out. Study findings are classified into the aspect of physical environment planning for facility residents and the aspect of management of residents by facility workers in general. The problems of physical environment of wandering space for the elderly with dementia: First, it is urgent to provide wandering space. Second, thoughtlessly installed chairs in the corridor impeded wandering behaviors. Third, the grips installed in the corridor space were irregular, thus causing inconvenience for wandering behaviors. Fourth, outdoor space for wandering space was insufficient and not managed properly, thus making residents' use of it difficult. In order to improve these problems, it is necessary to newly or additionally establish wandering space and modify the location of chairs or establish alcoves, thus reducing impedimentary elements for wandering behaviors. In outdoor space, it is necessary to provide outdoor wandering path and install CCTV additionally in order to manage residents easily and establish a flower bed courtyard as wandering space for the elderly with dementia. The problems occurred when facility workers managed facility residents: First, understanding for the elderly with dementia and perception of wandering space were insufficient. Second, facility workers were insufficient in its number for the management of facility residents and the support of wandering behaviors of the elderly with dementia. In order to carry out the management of residents more easily, it is necessary to provide facility workers education, thus increasing their perception of wandering behaviors and wandering space for the elderly with dementia. By efficiently establishing the planning of space, it is necessary to reduce the burden of management. Providing a proper wandering space is important for not only residents but also facility workers. Based on study findings, therefore, it is necessary to maintain and alleviate facility residents' dementia, increase facility workers' job-satisfaction, and enhance the quality of environment of domestic elderly care facilities.
