The purpose of this study was to encourage recognition on multi-cultural family that Korean society faced, through realizing and more understanding diverse situations immanent in their life and through their experience while looking at child-rearing experience in women of multi-cultural families from their position. Therefore, the aim is to offer a foundation of developing the more qualitative and individual nursing-intervention strategy for allowing women and their children of multi-cultural families to possibly grow and develop as a Korean without discrimination and prejudice in Korean society. A research problem is "how is child-rearing in women of multi-cultural families being performed?" Period of data collection in this study was from April 2010 to May 2011. Subjects of this study are totally 13 women of multi-cultural families who have preschool children of dwelling in T city. These people include 4 Filipinos, 3 Vietnamese people, 2 Cambodian people, 2 Thai people, 1 Chinese, and 1 person from Uzbekistan. Materials were collected through in-depth interview & observation, and unofficial conversation through the surrounding figures. Frequency of interview per one subject was 3~5 times. Time of interview per once was taken about 1 hour. Data analysis is qualitative research that applied Spradley(1990)'s culture-descriptive method. The results of this study are as follows. First, through child-rearing experience, the women of multi-cultural families were indicated to be ‘trouble in communication,’ ‘an effort for language barrier,’ and ‘maladjustment to child-rearing culture’ for 「cultural barrier」, to be ‘worry about child's future’ and ‘concern about child's appearance’ for 「anxiety about future」, to be ‘undertaking child-rearing responsibility’ and ‘being not helped by family’ for 「burden for child-rearing」, and ‘longing for family in native country’ and ‘soothing missing with telephone call’ for 「homesickness」. Second, children at which the women of multi-cultural families looked through child-rearing experience were indicated to be ‘loner’ and ‘problem behavior’ for 「maladjustment」, to be ‘language developmental disability’ and ‘lack of the learning ability’ for 「poor language」, and to be ‘poor in making Korean food’ and ‘worry about child's undernourishment,’ for 「undernourishment」. Third, the families at which the women of multi-cultural families looked through child-rearing experience were indicated to be ‘humiliation’ and ‘complex’ for 「sense of shame」, to be ‘avoidance of child-rearing’ and ‘indifference to child-rearing’ for 「evasion of child-rearing」, and to be ‘couple without belief’ for 「lack of confidence」. Fourth, society of multi-cultural families was indicated to be ‘growing as a Korean’ and ‘wishing for child's happiness’ for 「desire for a child」, and to be ‘seeking economic stability’ and ‘application of supportive resources’ for 「having a hope」. Fifth, the common elements in women and children of multi-cultural families were indicated to be ‘loner,’ ‘quarrel with peer,’ and ‘worry about being likely teased due to difference in appearance’ for 「difference in appearance」, to be ‘worry about the resembled appearance’ and ‘being discriminated at kindergarten’ for 「family and social discrimination」, and to be ‘extreme discipline and corporal punishment’ and ‘problem behavior’ for 「unstable child-rearing」. Sixthly, the common elements in women and family members of multi- cultural families were indicated to be ‘being banned from using native language’ and ‘difference in child-rearer’ for 「lack of understanding about multi-culture」, to be ‘not knowing well a meaning in Hangeul(Korean alphabet)’ and ‘poor in speaking Korean’ for 「discontinuation in communication」, to be ‘being bound by husband,’ ‘husband's shifting child-rearing’ and ‘taking care of child alone’ for 「subordinate relationship」, and to be ‘husband's distrust’ and ‘being ashamed of wife’ for 「lack of confidence」. Seventh, the common elements in multi-cultural families and children were indicated to be ‘having fatigue as excuse’ and ‘father's indifference’ for 「lack of participation in child-rearing」, to be ‘trying to play alone’ and ‘playing just with toy’ for 「not playing with」, and to be ‘child's giving a hard time’ and ‘taking care of child alone’ for 「seeking only mother」. Eighth, the common elements, which are shown in women, children, and family members of multi-cultural families, were indicated to be ‘shameful to discrimination of appearance,’ ‘being discriminated at kindergarten’ and ‘worry about being likely teased about difference in appearance’ for 「social prejudice」, to be ‘being prohibited from using native language,’ ‘wife of being bounded by husband’ and ‘husband's distrust’ for 「exclusive family atmosphere」, to be ‘worry about child's school expenses(future),’ ‘desiring to have a job’ and ‘saving for child's future’ for 「economic difficulty」, and to be ‘receiving help from child-rearing instructor’ and ‘being helped by multi-culture center’ for 「coexistent different culture」. The following are the results of analyzing common themes, which were shown as the findings. First, the recognition of common child-rearing experience in women, children, and family members of multi-cultural families was 'social prejudice.' Thus, women of multi-cultural families were made difficult for being adjusted to Korean society due to all aspects in family life as well as appearance, and to difference and misunderstanding of a sight, which is being seen socially. Even Korean husbands were indicated to be difficult for managing life as a member of Korean family amid the eyes of prejudice and misunderstanding as saying of living by getting married to foreign woman. In addition, even children of multi-cultural families were feeling a sense of alienation, which proceeds with growing as a loner due to discrimination of language communication as well as appearance different from peer children at kindergarten or education culture center. Accordingly, these people were indicated to have a great difficulty in proceeding with living in Korean society owing to the prejudice of other culture, the discrimination, and the lack of understanding about other culture, in managing life as multi-cultural family. Second, the common child-rearing experience in women, children and family members of multi-cultural families was 'exclusive family atmosphere.' Thus, they were proceeding with making riskful family life due to perceptiveness with failing to form smooth family atmosphere caused by the lack of mutual communication among family members and children through accepting a woman from other country as one family member and by the mutual misunderstanding and distrust owing to different family culture and mind-set of centering on oneself. Third, the common child-rearing experience in women, children and family members of multi-cultural families was 'economic difficulty.' Thus, most of family economy was difficult, thereby having not made satisfactory life. The majority of husbands were poor laborers. Owing to bad income, life was very hard. In this way, even women of multi-cultural families, who felt anxious about the situation that isn't enough realistically, were indicated to work at factory or as part-time institute lecturers for a means of subsistence. Especially, this difficulty allowed these women to worry about educational expenses for children. Fourth, the common child-rearing experience in women, children and family members of multi-cultural families was 'coexistent different culture.' Thus, women of multi-cultural families showed an intention of trying to proceed with overcoming themselves through experiences on a situation, which may happen diversely amid Korean life, even if many conflicts are made due to several problems such as unsmooth communication in foreign life, imperfect child-rearing environment, and a conflict with parents-in-law caused by different culture.
