This study reviewed possibilities on leadership development effects of youth participations and tried to find methods of developing youth participation by analyzing effects of participation levels and shapes in youth management commission on leadership life skills.
This study was done on 252 teenagers from 10 youth training centers and youth centers and middle and high schools in Seoul. 132 of them had experiences of participating in youth management commission and 120 of them were ordinary teenagers. A questionnaire used for the study asked the number of participations and duration and period of participations, which are the three subcategories of existence and level of participations, and communication, group activity, decision making, human relations, self-awareness, organizational management and learning skills, which are the seven subcategories of leadership life skills. To analyze the date, the study used statistics of SPSS 12.0, and percentage, frequency, t-test and f-test were applied, and the level of significance was set at .05.
The followings are the results of this study:
First, it showed that differences in leadership development between genders had statistical significances in some sub-factors, including self-awareness, organizational management and learning skills. Female students revealed higher self-awareness and learning skills, and male students performed better than females in organizational management skill.
Second, it showed that differences in leadership development among schools have statistical significances in some sub-factors, including decision making, human relations and self-awareness skills. Overall, high school students, who are older and more physically developed and had more education, scored higher than middle school students.
Third, it showed that whether a student involved in a youth management commission had no statistical significances in most of the sub-factors. However, there was some statistical significance in one sub-factor, organizational management skills.
Fourth, it showed that the amount of time spent on participating in a youth management commission had some effects on leadership development. As an average time for each participation increases, it had more positive effects on communication, decision making, human relations, learning, self-awareness and group activity skills, and when it is more than 5 hours, students scored higher average scores in all sub-factors.
Fifth, it showed that the number of participations in a youth management commission had no meaningful effect on leadership development. However, there was some statistical significance in decision making skills. The average value of all other variables, including communication skills, were similar, indicating that the number of participations in a youth management commission have no big effect on leadership development.
Sixth, it showed that the period participating in youth management commission had no meaningful effect on leadership development. The average value of all seven leadership development sub-factors were not affected by participation period, and had no statistical significance.
Based on the results, I suggested the followings for future studies:
First, it is necessary to develop various curriculums for youth management commission participation activities.
Second, there should be systematic means making teenager participation more diverse.
Third, leadership improvement programs for each demographic characteristic and serving individual teenager character and preferences should be developed.
Fourth, there should be efforts to develop tools enabling to measure teenager leadership ability in more detail in the future.
Fifth, it is necessary to develop educational systems and manuals for participants and leaders of teenager participation activities.
