This paper is completed upon the purpose of tracing and analyzing the interlink between the formation of the grotesque and the de-subjectivization of the subject exposed from the contemporary Korean novels based on the novels written by Baek Min-seok and Pyeon Hye-young. The grotesque as an aesthetic strategy in their novels have 2 characteristics in common. Firstly, it is the desire that exposes and rebuilds the real world which is all spurted from the equivalent dimension, by destructing the normal world which is hierarchical by the order of the symbolic world. Secondly, it is the desire that tries to identify the reality beyond norms and imaginations which are surrounding daily lives. These grotesque strategies are realized in general through the neurotic subject with the somatization of narration, and the rearrangement of the space from 3 layers of the character, the narration, and the space. The former is revealed as the form of the exaggerating image description, and the latter is of the sentence arrangement.
Related with the desire to rebuild the world, by Baek Min-seok shows the realization process of independence recovery through de-subjectivization in the grotesque way with the regressive strategy that returns humans to species by presenting a paranoid subject defined as a 'male'. Facing the death, the de-subjectivized subject from devices finally returns to the earth of the carnival space from the urban space which is divided into the symbolic world and the real world. In comparison, by Pyeon Hye-young denies the maternal through the paraphrenic subject, progressively polarize the phenomenon of the sensuous identification with the object, and is intensified from the sensation transference to object's transference. So the subject itself reaches to be symbolized as a corpse or a body as the most objective factor. In fact, the de-subjectivization of the subject progresses to the ghost status which is insensitive to his own death at last without ending as a body. Such a ghost float endlessly on the closed territory of the real world which is twisted like Mobius' strip, and sustain its life after death.
As for the desire for the reality, what is specially noteworthy is Baek and Pyeon are actively utilizing 'Uncanny' in common, which is part of the grotesque. For Baek's sentences, they are amplified into the hysterical aspect through the on again and off again repeats, but for Pyeon's sentences, they have the obsessive structure by arranging the sudden unconscious discourses with maintaining the consistent expression. In each novels, the respective characters of subjects are all hysterical and obsessive just like such a strategy embodied. These two novels by those writers are on the spot where they are differentiated from their previous works, and has the extension of them at the same time. For Baek's case, the paranoiac male who was against the tiers of power is changed to the hysteric and lethargic subject which is obsessed with ghost of the system in the novel of . Pyeon's obsessive subject is not obscure ghost any more, and changed as a anonymous clerk who is always replaceable and alternate. Different from their previous novels, however, their de-subjectivization process is not headed for or hover over the specific imaginary space, but it is realized with the concrete experience which are directly touching the reality as 'something' from our daily lives. provides some hints that the manifestation of the real is very instant but it is something intoxicated by odds and ends like taking pictures and faced at every moment. In addition, by Pyeon implies the reality is the very daily life that is wanted to escape from, and the mysterious territory contactable in the memories of the insensitive times in the past.
As shown on the above, the progressive change aspect of the grotesque strategy in those two novels are closely connected with writers' viewpoints and approaches of subject's de-subjectivization. The grotesque as well as utilization of Uncanny has more focuse on that that senses which were staying outside humans find and seize the grotesque in humans by diverting attention from subject's externals to its internals. The role and the ability to save excluded and lashed out subjects from the current various devices as humans in the true sense of the de-subjectivization is the best power for the literature to meet politics
