Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine and compare the phonology of Korean and Vietnamese based on the comparative research of phonological system, syllable and phonetic phenomena in Korean and Vietnamese. The introduction section mentions about the reason and the purpose of this study, also research subjects and methods are reported. The literature review section takes a look on the thesis studied and compared the phonology between Korean and Vietnamese however, up to now those only deal with the Chinese part in Korean and Vietnamese. Some typical researches such as Myung Suk Cho's (2003) focused on phonology related to syllable (initial sound - middle sound – final sound), or Kim Ji Hwan’s (1998) focused on the first sound research and the comparison of the similarities and differences in Sino -Korean and Sino-Vietnamese, and two studies of the same author Le Tuan Son investigated the similarities and differences of Sino-Korean and Sino-Vietnamese in phonology, his Master's research is focused on the initial sound and syllable of Sino-Korean and Sino-Vietnamese in phonology, his PhD research studied on phonology, morphology and semantics in Sino-Korean and Sino-Vietnamese. Recently, the Master’s thesis of Pham Thi Ngoc (2010) studied on lexical and phonological systems in Sino-Korean and Sino-Vietnamese. The main content will be shown as the following layout: Section 2 presents and compares the phonological system in Korean and Vietnamese based on the report and comparison the system of consonants, vowels in Korean and Vietnamese, which can draw the similar phonemes and the only phonemes in Korean or the only phonemes in Vietnamese. Based on a comparison of the position of pronunciation, the method of pronunciation, I created a comparison of consonants and vowels to be able to identify the sound which is similar, close in terms of articulation and pronunciation. Although method for pronouncing affricate does not exist in Vietnamese, in real life, there is consonant pronounced by the method of pronouncing affricate in Vietnamese, it is consonant /c/. And by the method of pronunciation, although scholars recognize only /t'/ is pronounced with an airstream, but depending on the individual and local, in Vietnamese, there are also consonants such as /χ, f/ is pronounced with an airstream. So, Vietnamese are confused when they pronounce the /ㅋ,ㅍ,ㅊ/ in Korean with the /χ, f, c/ in Vietnamese Section 3 presents and compares syllables in Korean and Vietnamese. In the content of syllables in Korean, the Korean syllable structure, structure diagram, the Korean syllable types based on the composition of syllables, the limitations when link phonemes in the same syllables and limitations when a phoneme links with adjacent syllables will be presented in turn. In the content of syllables in Vietnamese, the Vietnamese syllable structure, syllable structure diagram, types of sounds based on the composition of syllables, limitations when phonemes link in the same syllable will be reported. Finally, the structure of syllables in Vietnamese and Korean, syllable types and the limitations when phonemes link in syllables will be compared. In this section, the principle of linking syllables before and after was presented, this phenomenon does not exist in the Vietnamese, and so Vietnamese people are difficult to take time to practice. Section 4 the phenomenon of the Korean phonetic and the phenomena in Vietnamese phonetics will be presented respectively, then, a comparison of phonetic phenomena in Korean and Vietnamese, the only phenomenon in Korean and the only phenomenon in Vietnamese, as well as the phenomena in both languages. All of the content reported in the introduction and the main part will be summarized in conclusion section.
