ABSTRACT A Study on the Moral Consciousness of Teenage Consumers - focusing on middle and high school students in Cheonan and Asan Area Kim, Hyoung Jung Department of Ethics Education Graduate School of Education, Kongju National University Supervised by Prof. Choi, Heung Soon As society and economy develop, our industrial structures change from primary industry into secondary or tertiary industry and just as prof. Rostow said, our society has also changed from a traditional society to an advanced ‘mass comsumer society’. Our society which has focused on producers also has turned into consumer centered-one since our society got through IMF. As teens, who will be prospective consumption participants, keep sound values and ethical attitude about consumption, they can not only become the host of the age of globalization but also lead a life as a rational citizen. That’s why it’s a meaningful to examine teens’ attitude about consumption closely. In order to examine teens’ conscious structure of consumption, both bibliographic approach and illustrative one were used. Theoretical background about ethical consumption is analyzed by way of bibliographic research, and real state of teens’ ethical consumption, illustrative research. About 400 secondary students in Cheonan-si or Asan-si were surveyed so as to analyze teens’ consumption consciousness. Specific research is like this. First, the questionaire for this research is made up of five independent variables such as sex, age, specialty, parents’ educational background, and their monthly income. Second, one domain - dependent variable – that is questioned about consumption consciousness is composed of 5 questions about our economic reality and 2 questions about our consumption. Third, Each independent variable which is composed of sex, age, specialty, parents’ academic background, and their monthly income was processed for the result analysis, and the encoded data collections were analyzed by SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) for the statistical processing. The result of research work about consumption consciousness is like this. 1) According to the result of the consciousness about our economy reality, their negative viewpoint about our current economic state takes up 43.7 percent among those surveyed, while about our household economic state, 28 percent. At the question “Can we be rich if we work sincerely and hard under the current economical structure?”, about 41 percent of subjects said ‘No’. This result of survey emphasizes the necessity of settlement of a fair and rational economic system as well as the education for right economy awareness. Also this survey shows that parents’ support is more important than their own effort so as to achieve their economic success, while a lot of students have a sound working attitude judging from answering that about 54 percent students will continue working regardless of their richness. 2) In a question about their consumption awareness ‘spending after saving’ takes up 27.5 percent, and the opposite holds 48.6 percent. This is why it is necessary to give teens a consumption education. In survey about imported goods, 28,8 percent of students prefer imported goods, while 31.2 percent of them do domestic. In buying goods students who consider its quality and price before everything else hold 59.5 percent, and those that stress on the fashioning trend among friends takes up 31.9 percent. The result of survey that 43.5 percent of students prefer the high priced famous brands and 24.8 percent don’t do it may indicate the possibility of teens’ excessive consumption. Friends have a strong influence on buying goods, which takes up 43.3 percent, the most purchase route which has 73.2 percent is through internet, and Design is ranked on top among various considerations in buying a famous brand. 41.1 percent of total price range of their brand carries a sticker price of 200,000 won or less, compared with 35.9 percent over 200,000 won. Their monthly cell phone charges from 30,000 won to 50,000 won takes up 38.1 percent, under 30,000 won is 33.2 percent, and compared with mobile charges between male and female students, male students who are charged over 30.000 won have the highest percentage, and female students pay from 30.000 won to 50.000 won mostly. According to the survey about the cause of the teens’ excessive consumption, product ads takes up 26.5 percent, upper class’ excessive consumption does 23.8 percent, and import of foreign brand goods, 21.6 percent. Accordingly I think it is time to encourage students to have a right consuming habit. The result of above analysis suggests that school, industry, local community should help students build up desirable and rational consumption culture, and have a right sense of value about consumption. Also the lasting research of consumption ethics should be made in that it has a close correlation with environmental ethics or bioethics.
