The fire alarm device plays a very important role in the life and safety of the occupants of a building: notifying them that a fire has broken out in the building. According to Korea and foreign country fire reports, lack of time to escape due to the delayed realization that a fire is raging accounts for a large proportion of all the lives lost in fires.
The signs of a fire can be recognized by a person’s sensory organs, through his/her sense of vision, smell, and hearing (auditory sense). With regard to the auditory sense, the law stipulates that a building must be equipped with fire alarm devices that generate a sound beyond a certain loudness level. The fire alarm devices of the apartments in Korea consist of a alarm bell and an emergency broadcasting speaker.
Due to the increase in the demand for a comfortable residential environment, however, as well as the enhancement of the quality of life of people, t the sound insulation of buildings has been consistently improving. It is thus necessary to consider whether the sound produced by a building’s fire alarm devices loud enough to enable the building’s occupants to detect it. Thus, there is a need to examine the various aspects of the attenuation of the alarm sound to the sleeping area (bedroom), such as the auditory conditions of the fire alarm devices that are currently in use, the fire alarm sound delivery properties, and factors of sound characteristic required in residential spaces.
This study was conducted for the purpose of an improved design for audibility of fire alarm sound in residential buildings. The study was conducted in stages, including the proposal of a proper fire alarm sound level within the sleeping area based on the international standards and on the related literature, the physical evaluation of the fire alarm sound attenuation, and a jury evaluation through auditory experiments and surveys.
The relevant standards and literatures of fire alarm sound level were researched on and analyzed to determine the proper fire alarm sound level within the sleeping area, and the attenuation of the fire alarm sound in 17 dwelling units of five different -type apartments with 63-73 m² floor areas and in a university dormitory consisting of 19 residential spaces was measured.
Furthermore, the sound insulation of the bedroom and front doors, and the sound attenuation based on the distance from the sound source to the bedroom, were measured and analyzed in the university dormitory and five apartments with 81-184 m² floor areas, for better fire alarm sound delivery. And Fire alarm delivery prediction design was performed, based on the measurement results and simulation, for the proposal of the proper fire alarm device conditions in residential buildings.
As a jury evaluation, the adequate fire alarm signal conditions were statistically analyzed that leads to correct escape actions by performing an experiment on 136 subjects with the use of the alarm bell, electronic siren, horn, and chime signals generally used in buildings.
The results of the study based on the acoustic condition analysis of the fire alarm sound concerning various aspects are summarized as follows :
1) The national standards related to the alarm bells and emergency broadcasting speakers of the current residential building are regulated by NFSC201and202 National Fire Safety Codes and propose the loudness of acoustic devices. The loudness of acoustic devices is important, but there is a need to establish detailed standards based on the acoustic conditions of the fire alarm sound in the sleeping area, so that the sleeping area occupants can recognize such alarm sound.
2) The results of the research on the adequate alarm level in the sleeping area based on the foreign standards and the related literature showed that there are individual differences among bedroom occupants concerning sleeping pattern and age, but 75 dBA was mainly proposed as the minimum alarm level in the bedroom. In the U.S. (NFPA 72) and U.K. (BS BS 5839: Part 1), the difference between the fire alarm sound level and the background noise is regulated to be not more than 15 dBA and 5 dBA, respectively. There is a need for a detailed study on the standards of the acoustic conditions of the fire alarm sound, but considering South Korea’s insufficient standards, it is adjudged that 75 dBA is adequate as the minimum alarm level in the bedroom.
3) The results of the measurement of the attenuation of the fire alarm sound in 17 apartment dwelling units with 63-73 m² floor areas do not correspond to 75 dBA in all the bedrooms in this study, with no relation to the opening of closing of the bedroom door, when only the alarm bell installed in the corridor or staircase was activated. Furthermore, when the emergency speaker installed in the living room, and the alarm bell, were simultaneously activated, 75 dBA could not be satisfied with the bedroom door closed. Meanwhile, when the alarm bell installed in the double-loaded corridor in a studio-type university dormitory was activated, the alarm sound level was determined to satisfy 75 dBA in the residential space. Accordingly, the delivery of the fire alarm sound to the bedroom was confirmed to be greatly affected by the sound insulation of acoustic obstacles such as the door as well as by the sound attenuation based on the positioning relationship between the bedroom and the space where the alarm device was installed. Concerning this aspect, it was adjudged that the installation and operation of a fire alarm device within the dwelling unit(living room)is desirable so that the alarm sound would be efficiently delivered to each bedroom in the apartment.
4) The results of the measurement of the properties of sound attenuation from the sound source installed in the living room (the central part of the wall of the living room where an AV system terminal was installed) to each bedroom (the central area of the bedroom) showed an attenuation of 0.48 dB (R2=0.7982) per meter of the distance from the source to the bedroom, with the bedroom door closed, and 0.72 dB (R2=0.3001) with the bedroom door open.
Furthermore, the results of the measurement of the sound insulation of the bedroom doors of nine apartment dwelling units showed 18-23 dB sound insulation (Dp.w) based on the size of the gap at the bottom of the bedroom door. For university dormitories, the sound insulation (Dp.w) values of the bedroom door and the front door connected to the main corridor were 21-22 dB and 19 dB, respectively.
5) To determine the adequate design conditions of a fire alarm device, the acoustic -analysis program was used to conduct a simulation. The maximum noise level at the point 1 m away from the fire alarm device was set at 110 dBA, considering the hearing loss of the occupant, and the fire alarm device was installed within the living room (or in the corridor connected to the living room), with the device located at the center of the two bedrooms farthest from the device considered sound attenuation. The results of the examination of the apartment dwelling units with 81-304 m² floor areas showed that one to three fire alarm devices were required according to the location of the bedroom or the floor area of the dwelling units, to satisfy the sound level of 75 dBA in all the bedrooms, and it was determined that the sound power level of the fire alarm device must be 99-108.2 dBA. Furthermore, in the case analysis of studio type residential space with double-loaded corridors (dormitories, hotels, and residential officetels), it was determined that the sound power level of the fire alarm device installed within the double-loaded corridors should be approximately 109.6 dBA, with four to seven alarm devices (distance between devices: 6.1-17.9 m).
6) A jury evaluation experiment was conducted on a total of 136 subjects with normal hearing, to determine the conditions of fire alarm signal(sound) that will drive the room occupant to carry out correct escape behavior. The results of the experiment showed that the identification or understanding of the meaning of the fire alarm signal is related to the carrying out of the correct escape behavior. The effect of the addition of a voice alarm (human-voice warning) in the fire alarm to enhance the degree of identification of the alarm was analyzed. Moreover, the alarm bell, among the four types of fire alarm signals used nationally and internationally, was determined to have relatively excellent identification. It is important to educate building occupants regarding the meaning of the fire alarm signal, to heighten their identification of such fire alarm signal, and it is adjudged that a study on the preparation of a fire alarm that is appropriate for the domestic conditions, considering the properties of the fire alarm sound delivery in buildings and the identification of the alarm signal by the occupants, is required.
