Narrative preaching methodology with effective applications Dong-Jo Baek Graduate School of Pastoral Ministry Chongshin University Th. D. in Preaching Tutored by Woo-Hong Jeong Two big wheels called traditional homiletics and new homiletics, rolling together, are leading modern preaching. While one wheel might be insufficient, two wheels rolling together was expected to lead this era's ministry with momentum, but Christianity, which carrying out the ministry of the Gospel is primary, has met a crisis bigger than that of any other past era. This may be because the road of this era that the wheels must pass is too rough and uneven. Additionally it is true that the two homiletics are inable because they have unsatisfactory parts in many ways and sometimes even carry serious problems. In the post-modernism era we live in, ministry is facing a severe challenge. And more than anything, this challenge has caused a change in the era and the audience who live in it, bringing about a crisis to the pulpit. Therefore, preachers met a era which they had to sensitively react to this change to bring about a more flourishing ministry, although not altering the essence of preaching, but planning a change in the methodology. Because traditional homiletics could not lead the pulpit and Christianity in this era of change, a new homiletics movement began starting with Fred B. Craddock's 『As One Without Authority』 in 1971. Their main assignment as well was to change preaching methodology according to the shifted era and the audience. If past homiletics focused on rhetorics’ 'style', the new homiletics scholars started to study on how to structure sermons by focusing on rhetorics’ 'arrangement', placing this in the center of academic discussions. New homiletics started to present various forms of ministry methodology such as 'inductive preaching', 'story preaching', 'narrative preaching', and phenomenological preaching'. 'Narrative preaching', which is the topic of this paper, is a preaching methodology developed by taking a key position in this flow. New homiletics is related to stories in any way. Narrative preaching methodology, centering on new homiletics scholar Eugene L. Lowry, was proposed to recognize the problems of traditional homiletics, and the problems raised due to the change of this era and the audience, and effectively solve all of them. Narrative preaching focused on 'effective delivery' more than anything because the audience doesn't try to listen to sermons delivered from the pulpit due to various reasons. Also, as a breakthrough, it used a plot, a structure used in stories, to narrate sermons as a way to make the audience interested and listen to them with concentration until the last moment. This ministry methodology later attracted many scholars' and preachers' attention. This is because this methodology is not one 'created' to follow the periodical change, but one He used Himself and because it considers the genre of the Bible and perfectly fits into this era's academic change, which calls for more Biblical preaching. Therefore narrative preaching has brought about a lot of interest as it became realized as the most modern and simultaneously the most Biblical method, and many studies were made continuously. Even now, it is true that scholars in sound the Reformed Church bodies are excited about this fresh challenge. Unfortunately, like other new homiletics scholars' theories, narrative preaching has a severe problem as a whole, contrary to the appearance of the theory. Also the structural change shown on the outside is a result of distorted theology, hermeneutics, and homiletics. This problem is more serious than that of traditional homiletics. As the problem with traditional homiletics was mostly one shown in the audience's view, a structural and methodological change was needed. Now new scholars need to straighten basic theology and Biblical values and preaching philosophy, because currently the problem is in a more fundamental area of theology, hermeneutics, philosophy, and homiletics. These unproper premises effect methodology and reveals problems in the structure of preaching. As any methodology or structure is a theological product, it is affected without doubt. The biggest problem of narrative preaching is that scholars do not fully take the Bible as His authoritative message. Therefore, to them, what the Bible, which is God's message, means is not that an issue, and they came to reject the application of drawing the decision and change of life by connecting the meaning of the body accurately to today's audience. These are the two essential pillars in Biblical preaching, but they are dismissing both. As a result, narrative preaching denies direct application or a closed conclusion structurally. I have confronted this pitiful flow of homiletics. Narrative preaching carried various fundamental problems starting from basic theological areas to all the fields of homiletics, although it had the potential to be a more Biblical preaching methodology than the three point sermon. Thus, although narrative preaching could have been the most adequate and effective preaching methodology in this era, it became deteriorated into one that does not follow His ways, but simply pursues human methods and abilities, and actually became a preaching methodology that could not show the power and honor of ministry. To solve this problem, I have studied and proposed a 'effective narrative preaching methodology with applications'. This 'effective narrative preaching methodology with applications' can be a more Biblical preaching methodology by adjusting all the distorted premises, which are the roots of narrative preaching methodology, starting with the narrative preaching method's incorrect Biblical values. Also, this is a method which can derive change by effectively delivering His message to the audience, and confronting and applying this to their lives an
