Nowadays, magnesium alloys are being widely applied to structural parts, especially automotive and mobile electronic parts due to the lowest density in the structural materials, excellent mechanical properties, superior electric shielding and superior damping capacity. Among the magnesium alloys, AZ91D, AZ31 and AM60 are the most widely used as commercial alloys, and they are applied to the automotive parts, i.e. cylinder head, steering wheel core, seat frame and so on. Although they are used widely in automotive industry, their applications are limited to the parts operated at temperature below 120℃ because they show poor creep resistance and large decrease in strength at elevated temperature due to the thermal instability of microstructure. Moreover, magnesium is also well known as a very active metal and its alloys have a low corrosion resistance, resulting in restricted application of magnesium alloys to exposure environment. Therefore, in order to be extensively used in the automobile industry it is very important to improve the elevated temperature properties and corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. Many intensive and extensive fundamental investigations on the creep property and corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloys have been carried out during the past decade. The common way of improving heat-resistance of magnesium alloys is to form thermally stable precipitates to prevent grain boundary sliding during the creep deformation. On the other hand, the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys was improved by forming a continuous secondary phases acting as a corrosion barrier or adding elements may incorporate into the protective film and thus increasing its stability. The most effective alloying elements for such purpose are rare earth metals which result in a significant improvement of creep and corrosion resistance. However, these elements are expensive, limiting widespread application of such alloys. The present study tried to design the new heat resistant Mg alloys by adding Al, Sn, Si and trace elements (Sr and Zn). For the Mg alloys design, Al was added to sustain castability and mechanical properties at room temperature. Si and Sn were added to obtain the thermally stable intermetallic compounds along grain-boundaries. Trace elements were added to control the morphology of Mg2Si phase from Chinese script to polygonal shape. The casting of Mg alloys was carried out in electric resistance furnace with a graphite crucible protected by CO2+SF6 gas. The melt was held at 700℃ for 10 min to the complete dissolution of alloying elements and then poured into a permanent mould preheated at 200 ℃. Microstructure of the Mg alloys observed with XRD, OM, SEM-EDS and TEM-EDS. Tensile, creep, potentiodynamic and immersion tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical and corrosion properties of Mg alloy. The results of this study are summarized as follows. The microstructure of the as-cast Mg-6Sn-5Al-2Si(TAS652) alloy mainly consisted of α-Mg, Mg17Al12, Mg2Sn and Mg2Si phases. Sr addition increased the tensile strength by changing the Chinese script Mg2Si to a polygonal shape, but decreased the creep rupture strength of the TAS652 alloy due to an increase in grain boundary area, where most cracks are initiated. Zn addition decreased the creep resistance of the TAS652 alloy due to the larger volume fraction of Mg17Al12 phase where cracks are initiated. The creep resistance of the TAS652 alloy was decreased by the addition of trace elements. The Sr addition was effective on the corrosion resistance of the TAS652 alloy by modifying the Chinese script Mg2Si to a polygonal shape and distributing them. However, the addition of Zn decreased the corrosion resistance due to the increased amount of Mg17Al12, which caused galvanic corrosion. To improve the mechanical properties of TAS652 alloy, heat treatment was performed. The Mg17Al12 phase dissolved into the α-Mg matrix after the solution heat-treatment at 420℃ for 4 h and the Mg17Al12 and Mg2Sn phases were finely distributed within the Mg matrix after the agingheat-treatment. The tensile strength of the solution-treated TAS652 alloy was decreased, but its creep strength was increased, due to the reduced volume fraction of Mg17Al12 phase. The improved tensile and creep resistance of the peak-aged TAS652 alloy resulted from the dispersive distribution of fine Mg17Al12 and Mg2Sn phases insides grain.
