This thesis is to project a discussion class model for improving students’ listening abilities in an attempt to implement effective listening training in a discussion class focused on student activity. Chapter Ⅰ dealt with necessity, purpose and method of this study as well as foregoing studies. The actual school site is going through diverse changes with many opinions waiting for coordination. Under these circumstances, what we should put first above all is debate and this fact allows a growing role of the national language subject in relation to teaching ways to debate. Thus, at least for seamless communication, an object of the national language subject, well-organized listening class should be operated on the site through a debate class, in which critical listening is considered the most important. For this purpose, by reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of the existing debate class model, a class plan was devised in order to implement specific listening education rather than speaking education. The majority of forgoing studies used debate class for improving the ability of speaking and thinking rather than listening. Chapter Ⅱ clarified that, after reviewing many types of debate, pro-con debate which focuses on logical validity of arguments is apposite for improving listening ability. Debate class uses may types of debate, but class model using pro-con debate, which is most useful in improving listening ability, includes panel discussion class and pro-con cooperative learning. Panel discussion has a limitation in concentrating on discussion and likelihood to exclude participating students from evaluation if they are not debaters. Pro-con cooperative learning, which is a debate made in a small group, is hard for a teacher to feedback with limitations in evaluating students. So overcoming and complementing these weaknesses, the author wanted to devise a debate class plan which is easy for all class students to participate in debate and go on improving their listening abilities. Chapter Ⅲ projected a new debate class plan and illustrated the actual process of applying this. This class consists of preliminary stage, implementing stage and finish stage. Preliminary stage consists of setting learning objects, organizing groups, presenting and selecting the topic, and practicing an actual discussion class. In implementing stage, debate class is actually done in division into debater group and juror group. In this class, which goes on by group, each of debater group and juror group participates separately in the process to improve listening abilities. First, debater group who directly participates in debate is subject to a discussion type changed for improving listening abilities. Discussion type was so modified as to concentrate on the process of listening by attaching importance to verifying question, answer and rebuttal and by omitting the final remark. On the other hand, step-by-step process of listening was applied to juror group to improve critical listening abilities by recording and asking about what is heard. In finish stage, evaluations are made on debaters, jurors and class model. By one-time evaluation on debaters and four-time evaluations on jurors (over 5 times in all), both the whole process of discussion as debater and the process of listening to discussion as juror are reflected onto the points of performance test. For debater evaluation, the whole process from preparation for debate, to actual debate and preparing a discourse is evaluated with a full score of 60 points. Juror evaluation is done over four times with a full score of 10 points through a leaning paper to record what is heard. Class model evaluation is done by colleague teachers and students participating in the class through an open class and questionnaire. This class plan overcomes weaknesses of the existing class models and poses an expectation for continued growth of listening abilities with the following features. First, debate type was modified with addition of step-by-step process of listening to improve listening ability, which carries the biggest importance in debate. Second, in a pro-con debate class, students not directly participating in debate was made to record the whole process of debate as juror in an effort for all students to concentrate on the discussion. Third, not only debaters but also jurors were allowed to participate in the process of performance test through recording a learning paper. Fourth, continued education and training on listening were promoted through repeated step-by-step listening. Fifth, solid substance of discussion class was sought for by prior class on debate in preliminary stage in parallel with class by debate in implementing stage. Lastly, it was intended to complement a discussion class in want in the middle school course and for a teacher to apply easily for one-semester performance test. Chapter IV looked into the significance of the discussion class plan giving reasons why pro-con debate class is suited for improving listening abilities. Pro-con debate class met the necessity for spoken language education and emphasized improving listening ability within education integrated with speaking. It also well reflects the interactive nature, a system of speaking and listening content for the revised 2007 curriculum. Pro-con debate in which one can lead a discussion only by listening to the other’s opinion offers an opportunity to practice critical listening repeatedly. Pro-con debate covers all types and levels of listening, calling attention through dynamic process of listening to the process of presenting one’s opinion and rebuttal instead of focusing on the result of discussion. Chapter V described many reasons why it is difficult to execute listening education on the school site. Then, with a summary of the content of this thesis, possibilities and limitations of pro-con debate class were briefed about. This study initiated from reflections on my attempts for debate class in many types has led to project a pro-con debate class for improving listening abilities. I specifically illustrated the process of implementing class based on actual experience, but have not succeeded in its diverse applications by school level or region. This debate class plan for improving listening abilities has been put into practice as the performance test for one-semester process by applying listening education neglected on the site of school with addition of step-by-step listening. This class plan providing students with repeated opportunities to listen critically is expected to improve their listening abilities.
