This thesis is purposed to find a necessary environmental conditions and plans in terms of expanding overseas market in the circumstance of issuing globalization in the Korean film industry. From the beginning of the 2000s, the Korean film industry has shown a great development in the matter of quantity and also in its quality, but due to the decrease of the home video market, it had to face an unbalanced revenue structure problems. As a solution, expansion to the overseas market has become one of the top issues in the industry. However, even throughout the enhancement of the Korean film's status in the international market, which was made by the continuous winning in the prestige film festivals and Han-ryu (Korean Wave) phenomenon, the export has started to show down ways in the late 2000s. Therefore, the international co-production has newly risen as a solution to break through the limitation of the revenue structure. An international film co-production is defined as a film production made by more than two production companies with different nationalities. The form of it varies from co-development, co-financing, co-production arrangements to a collaboration for film locations, post-productions and participations of crews. The beneficial aspects of the international co-production is being able to diversify the financing sources including the government's subsidies, distribute more easily in the partner's country, and sharing the production experiences from its partner, but also it can have difficulties in matters of making decisions, owning rights, distance and time problems and communicating with different languages. These days, many countries are expanding supporting policy to invigorate the international co-productions by being aware of how it can affect positively both to the film industry and to spreading their culture worldwide. However, Korea is in its beginning level for the international co-productions both in government and industry sides. Followed by these circumstances, to examine whether the international co-production can be the possible solution to expanding overseas market for Korean films, this thesis is focused on 'film global projects', which is one of a kind in international co-production, targeted to world film market and to earn the most out its revenue. A 'global project' is an international co-production film made by more than two parties of different nationalities, high budgeted, commercial film worked by various group of nationalities from development to production, distribution and marketing, targeting for high return of profits. Also, a global project was found to have many similarities with the Hollywood blockbusters in matters of targeting the high return of the revenue, high cost production, and having a high concept strategy for better marketing. To examine whether a global project can be the solution for breaking the limitation of the Korean film industry's revenue structure, a focused study on two cases of global project has been executed. As the result, it was examined that global project can be highly valued for its possibility in expanding the international market for Korean films but for the better result, it needs to focus on reducing the risks that can be caused by working with various parties of different nationalities. For a successful production of a global project, first of all it needs a specific target market and strategy by a thorough study of the target market's conditions, a high qualified script, high concept marketing strategy based on that study, also a well qualified and experienced producer who can communicate with no obstructions is required. Through the study, other than the specific strategy for a successful global project, it is found that a realistic and supportive governmental policy is needed for stimulating the international co-production to expand the international market for Korean films. As to the realization of this plan, this thesis suggests to make programs such as providing internships to experience the real co-productions, making supporting programs to simulate the co-production projects, linking global networks, building global post-production center, and promote production service companies for bringing in global productions to location in Korea.
