The purpose of this thesis are threefold: one is to study historical and social background of recent advent of vegetarianism as an alternative foodway in South Korea. The second is that to find various cultural pressure from collectivism in meal time due to her or his unique diet. The last is to review in detail how vegetarians can handle those difficulties in social interaction. Nowadays, vegetarianism is becoming an attractive food option replacing conventional food habits in South Korea, and some people are trying to change their foodways when they learned about multiple advantages of vegetarianism. Although there were plenty of vegetarians in Korea until recently, today's vegetarian is different from traditional one on the point that the former has chosen vegetarianism consciously for several reasons. The researcher can find the changing atmosphere of society, and the appearance of new values and ethics by identifying various reasons of vegetarians. More and more people are choosing vegetarian diets because of health concerns, training of the mind, animal welfare, environmental and social problems. However, they experience many unexpected problems after choosing vegetarian diets. The pressure from other people is the major difficulty than temptation of eating meat or lack of vegetarian restaurants. In particular, strong culture of collectivism in Korea bring severe conflict and stress in social interaction. After all, they give up vegetarian diets or cut off relations with others. This thesis classifies pressure from collective culture in 3 categories: identifying differences, attempt of unification, ignorance and exclusion of vegetarians. Particularly, vegetarians in low rank experience the most pressure from collective culture in Korea. In these circumstances, some people fail to maintain their vegetarian diets. Nevertheless, many vegetarians are trying to cope with difficulties by using useful strategies of their own. Because joining vegetarian club gives them philosophical or nutritional knowledge, practical information as well as emotional comfort, it is essential for keeping vegetarian diets for many people. Moreover, adopting another reasons of vegetarianism enables them to justify their diets. In social interactions, they go through the difficulties by opposing criticism, avoiding meal time, hiding their identity, not to making inconvenience, and giving an excuse. In conclusion, this study of "Becoming a Vegetarian in South Korea" demonstrates that this process is far more complicated and dynamic than that in other individualistic cultures. In addition, the research on vegetarian can give considerable insight to the study on minority, food and eating, and so on.
