Recently, requirements for the automotive industry have become more severe in connection with reduction in weight, fuel consumption and environmental impact. Much attention, therefore, has been focused on aluminum because of a wide variety of unique properties, especially lightweight properties. For their practical applications, bonding and welding technologies should also be established aside from alloy design, micro-structure control, plastic forming, casting, surface treatment, etc. However, aluminium alloys are not easily weldable by conventional fusion welding techniques because the quality of the welded joint is deteriorated. Friction spot joining (FSJ) is one of the attractive technologies for welding of aluminum alloys.
In this study, FSJ between AA5182-O aluminium alloy sheet with a thickness of 1.0mm and SPCC steel sheet with a thickness of 0.8mm was performed. And then, the influences of joining conditions on properties of the friction-spot-joined(FSJed) specimens were experimentally investigated.
In all the joining conditions, sound joints were successfully obtained except the joining condition of the tool plunge depth of 1.2 mm which was not bonded. Thermo mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and stir zone (SZ) were observed except the joining condition of the tool plunge depth of 1.2 mm. Hooking is observed except the some joining conditions. The hardness of FSJed zone exhibited higher than that of base metal, but there is no special tendency in hardness although changing the joining conditions. This result shown that the dynamic recrystallization and the grain refinement were occurred in the SZ. In addition, the hardness of the HAZ was lower than that of the base metal. The hardness exhibited the highest value of about 91.49 HV0.1 in aluminium sheet, at the tool rotation speed of 500 rpm, the tool plunge speed of 300 mm/min, the tool plunge depth of 1.4 mm and the dwell time of 0 sec. The hardness exhibited the highest value of about 210.2 HV0.2 in steel sheet, at the tool rotation speed of 500 rpm, the tool plunge speed of 300 mm/min, the tool plunge depth of 1.6 mm and the dwell time of 3 sec. During the tensile shear test, the FSJed specimens were fractured near the residual pin hole in all the joining conditions. The maximum tensile shear load exhibited the highest value of about 3.29 kN, at the tool rotation speed of 500 rpm, the tool plunge speed of 100 mm/min, the tool plunge depth of 1.4 mm and the dwell time of 3 sec, the maximum tensile shear load exhibited the highest value of about 3.29 kN. Also, the tensile shear load of the joining conditions which the hooking were observed are lower than that of other joining conditions.
